I'm looking into buying my son a dirt bike for his 5th birthday. I know f all of bikes so I'm not really sure what I should be looking for and what I should stay away from. Any advice would be greatly received.

Can't beat a Honda fifty. Be prepared to upgrade quite quick, but the resale on them is pretty close to new price and there is always people wanting them.Whatever you do, don't get him a quad as kids go way too fast on them before they ave the skills, where on a bike they fall off a lot and learn to ride.

Suzuki jr50, reason being the foot brake is where it is on a big bike. I had far less trouble going from that to a geared bike than my friends that had the honda and Yamaha, which have both brakes on the handle bars

They also have height adjustable suspension for when kids grow.

also set out far more like a normal bike with chain drive, pretty sure the others had shaft drive! the Jr does actually have a gear lever too though from factory it only has 2 positions. start it up in N,then push/pull into gear, clutch less single speed from there. it can be modified to have an ULTRA low 1st for hills etc.

Eeek that's a bit over my head but sounds like the bike we need especially if its adjustable. he has a real passion for bikes and lucky enough to have a huge track at his grandparents farm. I may have to study up a lil more can u recommend a website that may help me!

ideally I'd go to a Suzuki dealership and see one in person, I was never very big but by the time I was 7 or so I was too big for it. if you look for one on here, the older ones have a metal tank, the newer have plastic tanks. bike pics. com is a good place to look and see what year it is

or any other dealership, don't limit yourself to one make or model, it's about what suits your boy best, not what suited me 25 years ago ;)

CRF or TT-R :)
Just my slightly biased opinion.

I got my 4 year old a Honda qr50, my son can put both feet flat on the ground with this older bike, but with the Yamaha pw50 and crf50 he could"nt. As with quads the kfx50 is a great bike for the kids, doesn't tip over as easy like my nephews lt50 does.Stay away from the Chinese one's as well
