Seems to me that driving to the conditions these days has been forgotten. I would think that if you hit the roadside gravel you are pushing your driving ability beyond the limit
Its always someone or something else's fault Woody. It is never incompetence, lack of basic skills or exceeding your own personal limitations !

So, in the first one, the driver was young and unlicensed, in the second the driver was speeding. How exactly is it the gravels fault again! And of course head-on collisions wouldn't happen if there were centre barriers, let's just put barriers up every highway shall we!

maybe they should seal all the way to the grass then or seal all our gravel roads, I drive 22km each way on gravel daily, the only issues I have is weekend warriors that think their chopped down townie bush hack with tyres wider than they are tall and 12 lights on bars above the cab ( you know the type) will still be controllable when they have to get off the gravel into the grass at 85km/hr cos I've come round the corner at 55 and I ian't grabbin grass because of them, theres plenty of room for us both but they chicken out when the gap is less than 300mm, me- mirrors are cheap and I don't bother replacing them anyway
drive to conditions but more importantly drive to your true ability - you may think you're a rally driver but the reality is you have difficulty getting down your own drive

#1- The 'gravel' shoulder is a misnomer. What is a frequent cause is the hard raised tarseal edge against the gravel which hooks the front wheel causing drivers to over correct. A compacted gravel hard shoulder which is level with the tarseal edge would make matters a little better.

My teenager is learning to drive and so far is doing most of her driving on gravel roads. Many years ago when I was learning to drive, before we were allowed to drive on a gravel road, we had to walk it first, then ride our push bikes on it and then we were allowed to drive a car on it lol.
Everyone should learn to drive on a gravel road it's just as important as people having to learn to navigate traffic lights, roundabouts and heavy traffic flow.

Or you're simply not paying attention.
That seems to me to be the biggest killer these days. But much easier to blame naughty gravel.

What about whats after the gravel verge, that could be bloody dangerous as well so best we remove those obstacles as well.

I have to laugh when I read threads like this, in conjunction with those telling cyclists to ride in the verge.

Our best friends sister died when she hit the gravel on the side of the road and ended up under a truck. Very sad
rob_man,

So some idiot let a seventeen year old unlicensed driver drive with kids in the car, the driver cocked up really badly and it's the road's fault! Come on. Really.
