Tossing up between either of these wagons.Likely year around 2004.Research seems to indicate they have about the same room volume wise, just the forester is higher, while the outback a little longer.Driving will be mainly on roads with the odd excursion onto farms so the slightly extra ground clearance will be beneficial.Anyone got on comparisons or feedback to consider!

(sits back and waits for the suby haters to arrive) Both will do the job you want them for so i would take both for a test drive and see which one grabs your attention.

I always felt a little more comfortable about bouncing around off road in my Forerster than in an Outback.
The 2.5 litre non turbo Forester is a fine all rounder. Very rare in that engine spec (and only sold NZ new) but worth hunting out.

Forester is a purpose built SUV based on the Impreza, while the Outback is a modified Legacy, so they're quite different cars. In a nutshell, Forester better off road, Outback better on road.

I've got a 2007 Forester and it is very good on the road, quiet, handles well and good suspension, plus quite frugal. Not a heap of power though, but it is adequate (2 litre). It cost $11,500 with 112km.

Take a 3 litre outback for a spin - it may sway you significantly towards the outback.
