What to do -not enough hardener in the bog.

j_fung9007, Mar 19, 11:52pm
I did my caravan up with some metaltech filler/bog (from Supercheap Autos) yesterday. Just been to the garage and realised the bog is still soft (not enough hardener!!). Is there any way I can fix this without re-do the whole thing again! Can I apply hardener straight on top of it! will the bog eventually harden up!

I've had the same problem myself- it eventually hardens over time. Maybe you could puta heat lamp on it to speed things up!

Re do it.

How much area wise have you put in!! Scrape it out and start again, do it once.do it right.

Yer.rip it out and do it again. It wont go off if you haven't put enough hardener in the mix.

Have a look at your tin of filler and then look at hardner and see how much they give for the amount of filler. Its not alot really is it but if you don't put enough in it will compromise the whole job eventually. If its still soft over night you really need to remove it and start again.
I don't know that filler in particular but it sounds like the blackish stuff and if it is it is hard mixing stuff as it is. If your hardner is red it dosn't change the colour alot but enough to see its all changed.
same procedure for any filler but that metal stuff is difficult to use at times.
As a rough guide for a cup of filler you would use about 1/4 teaspoon of hardner.
We get 3 ltr tins and the harnder is not much bigger than a .ummm eeer, bout size of 3/4of a credit card.

do yourself a favour, scrape it off and start again

Sounds like a redo.
bugger.

I sell the stuff (bog that is) daily, the usual problem I come across is overhardening, people needing to buy more hardner. There is enough hardner in the tube supplied to do a tin, actually in the heat of summer having hardner left in the tube is desirable.
In your case of underhardening, it may eventually harden (ish) but I would never trust it. The only answer really is to remove it and start again. Sorry but it is part of the great learning curve.

What i've always wondered over 30 years of using "bog" is 'how the hell do i know how much 2 - 4% is' LOL. Is it by volume or weight! Don't think i've ever "under hardened" tho'.

Lol, good old bondy, now a brand owned by 3M, several of their current releases in NZ are products from the bondy factory.

As far as overhardening, come across a couple of examples in the past couple of years of the excessive hardener bleeding through the primer and showing through the paint.

I wonder why the painters can (generally) follow hardening instructions 4:1,2:1 etc, yet the panelbeater goes add more hardner like a mad scientist and seems to think he is right.

gammelvind, Mar 20, 2:05am
My understanding is by volume, the can comes as a 3 litre can, even the 4 litre cans seldom contain more than 3.2 litres.

I do wonder if the OPs problem is not underhardened but undermixed, end result would appear similar.

attitudedesignz, Mar 20, 2:09am
Key word there mate is "panelbeater", they're a bred all on their own, unlike us painters who are all class & finesse.

Always thought Jeremy Clarkson would make a good PB, if ya hammer don't fix it, get a bigger hammer.

attitudedesignz, Mar 20, 2:12am
Quite possible. With that metaltech stuff you wouldn't see the "marbeling" you get when not mixing properly. Also that stuff is a pain to "mix" thoroughly.

I have to complement the posters on this thread for so far not having made any Viagra jokes!
Re the OP??

gammelvind, Mar 20, 2:20am
Haha, coming from an outside industry two of the things I observed coming into the panel and paint trade is;
Old panelbeaters are deaf and grumpy/opiniated.
Old painters, if they exist, are a little or a lot gaga lol.
Health and safety really are two swear words for the old timers.

attitudedesignz, Mar 20, 2:32am
HAHAHA, never a truer word was spoken. I couldn't vouch(sp!) for old painters as i am one.BUT.i have been called mad, crazy and even psychotic, someone even had the audacity to call me a sociopath, but it's ok.they're gone now hehehehehe

Don't ya go off some people in a hurry marcos!

Yeah, those solvent abusers get temperamental at times.

I've been both for the last thirty odd years, and yes, I am a grumpy, half deaf, opinionated, gaga sociopath.
I blame the public myself.
