disconnect the battery overnight, clean out the throttle body and make sure the throttle stop screw is still in tact and allowing the throttle plate to not fully close 100% (should be stopping it just off closing fully, to the point where the throttle plate no longer binds when no throttle applied), pull out the idle stepper motor and clean the passage inside and the stepper motor pintle with throttle body/carby cleaner, refit stepper motor, reconnect battery and allow the engine to warm up (may have to manually give it throttle the whole time to prevent stalling) and then now adjust the idle speed using the idle adjustment screw.

Dont touch the idle screw. IT should only be adjusted by a competent garage or auto electrician to ensure the IAC is at the right step count. It shouldn't need touching from the factory. if you think its fixed something, its only hiding the original problem. And you need a scantool to do it correctly. Stick with cleaning all the carbon from air intake tracks. Then remove battery for 10mins, start car and let it idle for 30mins. This should reset the adaptions (the part of engine ecu that learns how to fine tune engine).
Good luck

Thanks guys. problem solved. pulled it apart. used crc carby cleaner. stepper was rather carbonised. spotless now. also found the sensor on back of accelerator wasnt plugged in. seems to idle well now. just waiting for engine to cool right down to test cold start
