How can you compare a small 2 seater with a large saloon!

If I was looking for a Falcon or a Valiant, I wouldn't expect someone to suggest a Suzuki Cappuccino.

Ditto the Marina. Yes, we all know the Marina TC is quicker than an MGB in a straight line, but people looking for an MGB GT are generally looking for an additional car for the fleet, not a replacement for the family hack.

Yes, with the opening tailgate, they are surprisingly practical, but they are only a two seater - or room for a legless dwarf in the back.

Buy a series 1 landrover , will drive and handle nicer , comfier all round car ! Better build and wont rattle anywhere like and MGB !

socram, Dec 31, 11:03am
You must be joking.Handle better than an MGB!More comfy!I don't know what your body shape is but as one who over 6ft tall, one of the few cars with sufficient leg room.

Years ago, my best pal had an MGC GT and we did the trip from the East Midlands to Cornwall (about 300 miles) and as the passenger, it was probably the most comfortable car I had ridden in.He drove the whole way too, over-night, in the days before the extensive motorway system.

Yes to socram someone asking questions about am MG stick to the topic, great older classic, very cheap to own and buy if its been done up. The MG car club would give you all the answers, Be a great club to be in and do their runs and get togethers, all good simple affordable fun.

They go good - distinct sound.
Would not say no to a V8 one

mals69, Dec 31, 11:29am
You having a laugh ! MG kick a landrover for road handling anyday !
A landrover will bump loyalty points up on a fuel card quicker though .

Well, I rather like the old things, I know they rust, but probably no worse than anything else nearly 50 years old, and are not particularly quick, They handle OK provided there are no bumps. On the positive side, mechanical parts and body panels are all still available. As others have said, the roadster is more desirable, but the GT offers more comfort, safety, and security of possessions.

If you reconsidered the MGB roadster you could then consider a rebuilt Abingdon Edition. Only £79,895

Look for the best one you can but go for it. Join a car club and enjoy some club runs.

In what way would it overtake ! Would it be rust! Or having a piano on its roof

Hey,thanks guys. I actually own a 66 Rambler 770 Classic, restored in 2012. Very nice car now everything is sorted out,NZ new still got black plates and only 112000miles.Looking to get rid of it and buy a B,ive always liked them, only after a GT because of the above, comfort and security,i belong to VCC but would probably join the local MG club as well. Thanks again.

Toy car! Take the roof off man.

They seem to me to be a car that you need to be able to do the work on yourself, otherwise you need the ability to make the work a tax write-off if needing to pay someone.
With a Cooper muffler fitted, they would be amongst the top sounding cars out there.

I bought a hard top for my current 2 seater as the risk of skin cancer in NZ is bad enough as it is.

An MGB once set up properly shouldn't need anything more than the usual service checks, other than regardless of car make, rubber deteriorates over time, so keeping an eye on hoses is critical. With zero computerisation and electronics, and minimal plastic, they age pretty well.

Regardless of make of older car, I would fit electronic ignition and a solid state electronic fuel pump, as they are a massive improvement on originals with points.

Iffindone that looksgoodget itup on a hoist &look for any bodgedrust repairs.Anything structuralrequires certified repair @ $$$.Mechanicals are theleast of the worries .

ntalke, Jan 1, 8:47am
Before buying one I would get in contact with the local MG Club as they might know the car or could give valuable info and contacts to assist in the appraising

That newly painted MG could be hiding all sorts of problems

trogedon, Jan 1, 9:58am
To an ignoramus. They're cool classic sportscars. I've got 3 of them.

esky-tastic, Jan 1, 10:07am
Pfft!

And pfft again.

I was doing 60mph down the straight the other day in my MGB GT with some hero in his modern Jappa trying to crawl up my arse. I came to the bends and stayed at 60mph through them and thought "I wonder if Mr-I'm Such-A-Hero-Going-Straight-Ahe-
ad" can match me!". Nah, he lagged behind and stayed away from my arse the rest of the time he was behind me. I must have damaged his ego when he couldn't keep up with the old clunker through the bends.

trogedon, Jan 1, 5:22pm
Nice. BGTs are more aero than Roadsters and that extra bit of weight in the back helps the handling too.

poppy62, Jan 1, 6:37pm
A known problem for the BMC range of "A" series engines was cracked cylinder heads. There will be a few who will take issue with this, but as I wrecked reasonable volumes of everything BMC from 803cc A30s through to 1800cc (UK) Mowogs, I did sell lots of heads. Also 1st gear synchros were a weak point. From memory the front Trunnions(front suspension bronze bushes) were also a notable wear factor component.

poppy62, Jan 1, 6:49pm
Hmmmm! the first MGB (GT) I drove, I had just arrived in my (factory) mini ute (and we all know how they handle) Jump started a friends MGB GT and took it for a blast down the road. Thought hmmm sports car should handle well.Went round a slightright hand bend in Aranui Rd Mt Wellington and nearly rolled it. It was on par with an Austin Cambridge/ Morris Oxford in the handling depatment and definitely nowhere in the realms of the FWD Mowogs. Obviously you've modified your car because the standard one is diabolical.

trogedon, Jan 1, 8:10pm
Correction; ONE car you drove didn't handle well.

supernova2, Jan 1, 8:36pm
That's one of the problems with the GT, it handles completely differently to the soft top model.
