Warrant of Fitness.

Hi there,

Does anyone know if I can still get a warrant with my back bumper like this? The bumper and flap sticking out are still very sturdy - drove Dunedin to CHCH and back this weekend and had no troubles!

Thanks in advance

But why? Wouldn't it be easier to fit the bumper back on its clips?

If ya got a big heat-gun and warmed up the ding in the back, and got in behind with ya mit or whatever fits up there, and pushed the dent out - it will help the side to sit back in.
Seeing as you don't seem to care much, a big dollop of urethane up by the pointy bit, would help hold it in. Chuck a clamp on there for half a day until the ure goes off, and it's the best clip out!

Warrant expires on the 29th, and can't get it booked in at the insurance companys recommended panel beater till the new year! Not that I don't care - just can't get it repaired before the warrant expires, very unfortunate timing

Take it for warrant. If they say no, discuss situation and ask what you need to do. They can't expect it to look nice. It might just be secure broken bit somehow which could be done easily. You don't pay for a recheck so might as well try.

put a cable tie on the sticking out part pulling it back in and shel be right.

If you take it for a WOF at your local garage they should be able to tidy it up to an acceptable standard for you.

So you think if I chuck a cable tie on it it'll be alright for the warrant?

yes you should get a warrant, to be sure I would put a p/k screw in the side to hold it back, bit of silver paint, she be right, the car is probably not worth spending money on anyway.

Insurance just wrote my neighbour's Civic off for similar damage. They said it had caused structural damage. It was a similar vintage to OP's car. Valued at $1500

I see no season you would not pass a WOF.

Yeah the panel beaters had it for a few days and took a good look at it, quoted $1300 to fix. So if I can still get a warrant with it the way it is probably won't bother getting it fixed - only a 1989 Galant, although she runs very well!

Secure the wheelarch end so there is no chance of it hooking anything that might come into contact with it. That is the only issue.

Try the hot water trick.Pour kettle fulls of boiling hot water onto the ding.
Then reach up under and push the softened plastic of the ding out.
You should then find that the side part will want to drop pretty much back into place. tap it back with your palm might be all you need to do.
OR there may well actually be a screw/bolt/clip right on that front edge-unbolt it and you should be able to clamp the bumper corner back into place.

Ah those bumpers are so easy to dent being steel lower half with the plastic top part (which is sticking out). It doesn't have clips by the wheel arch it has studs with 10mm nuts (two of them if I recall correctly. It looks like the studs have either ripped from the steel bracket behind the plastic, or the plastic has torn away from the steel bracket. I would say the top plastic portion can be repaired easily while the lower metal portion will need some panel beating, and it's very hard to find an un-dented replacement. I highly doubt it's caused structural damage underneath.
