I have just removed the head from an SR20 Nissan Sentra, it had no compression and is suspected of overheating. The head gasket had some damage to it and I was wondering if anyone could explain how this damage could occur, my thouhgt is it could be wrong head gasket and for a motor with smaller bore size, couple of photos here http://petermcguireteanau.com/catalog.html

mmmm
? Does the sealing ring overhang the cylinder (Presuming this is the fact) OR ? Is the sealing recessed back from the cylinder lip.
Either could have been damaged during installation. OR Overhang could have been tapped by a valve.
? Is the bend upwards or downwards
Could have been something dropped in the cylinder OR A part of a piston or ring but that would be pretty clearly seen

was the bore binder over hanging the bore ? sr18 gasket fitted to sr20 ?

Yes I am thinking the metal peice around the bore was overhanging a bit and not getting correct seal. I will look again at it today.

if it overhangs then its an SR18 gasket (or you have a special sleeved block - unlikely!)
Im thinking damage during install be likely by possibly a locating dowel. What cylinder is it?

There is no real overhang, but the gasket did squeeze out in that one spot and it looks like the valve has come up and hooked it and pulled it down. I think I have a sleeved block, there is a we bit of crumbling around the top of No 2 and I think it looks like a sleeve, the gasket damage was no 3, the motor has not had a lot of love and I think there is some broken rings in there also, bad scoring of the bore.

Has it had recent work or is it first time down. sr20 is alloy block so it is definitely sleeved. Is the corresponding exhaust valve ok.

All the valves look OK, I think this motor has been opened up before, I might be able to clean up the bores, but unsure if there could be a sealing problem with one sleeve, it looks like it has broken away slightly near the top, so I dont know if this could be a problem or not. Massive leak from water pump and very likely overheated, no compressions and maybe broken rings.
