Special interest vehicles

Can anyone tell me what would be the consequences if I sold a vehicle I imported under a special interests permit before it had been registered in NZ for four years , we have had it in the country for three and a half years and have some people who want to buy it , it was never our intention to sell it and we have no intentions of importing again

The change of ownership may not go through if the flags come up at reg center, otherwise sell it through someone else(contract/lawyer) with your name on papers stipulating that it changes hand at said date.

In theory the new owner would need to apply for their own special interest permit . You say 3 1/2 years in country . is that since vin/rego or arrival ? Maybe you could sell now but change ownership in 6mths subject to some kind of legally binding agreement between both parties ? I had a similar issue when i was selling my Viper but fortunately by the time i sold it the 4 yr ownership requirement was met .

Its been registered for three and a half years in NZ , I was told I may get a slap on the hand and maybe banned from importing any more vehicles , which is ok but don't want to end up in the slammer or faced with a big fine

You are lucky there is only 6 months to go, so I would go ahead and sell it, but make it clear to the new owner, the change of ownership cannot be done for 6 more months. Obviously to cover yourself, go and have an agreement made up with a lawyer in writing that the new owner is fully responsible for the vehicle from the moment they take possession.
I believe the system is blocked for changing it online until the 4 years are up, so I wouldn't go there. After all, you agreed to that as part of the deal you entered into by law.

I imported a car and sold it after a year, no issues with LTSA. It was an older chev from the eighties.

There is no restriction on selling LHD cars over 20 years old.
They are not 'special interest vehicles' and are not subject to the same restrictions.

don't think i would advise you to break the law and get a lawyer to be party to to it thats just not right
best to contact nzta and asks for an exemption to sell the vehicle they are very understanding i have been told
