More errors with new ACC band ratings

gunny7, Jul 30, 8:25pm
just got the renewal for the wifes 2000 RAV4. Seems they have rated it lowest & most expensive (band 1) because it falls into the my1994 - 2000 catagory, when it is in fact a 2nd generation model produced from the 2000 - 2005my (and subsequently should be a cheaper Band 3 catagory). They need to realise that a model change can happen part way through a year, and not just assume that the last of the old model was produced right to 31st December before it was replaced on 1 January with the new model. I have emailed them, will be interested to see their response (that is if they bother to reply).

Yeah i have the same issue with my 1998 Mk4 Golf GTI, its the same model from later 98 to 2004, but only 99-2004 is getting Band 4, so i'm stuck on Band 2. due to the fact my car was made 4 weeks before 1999.

Keep the complaints rolling in, sent mine in two weeks ago quoting a number of examples of discrepancies due to their simplistic approach that simply isn't accurate re the placement of models, as opposed to registration years, in the correct bands, as it stands people are paying different rates for identical cars that happened to be registered at different times. How they have gone about implementing this is hilarious to say the least and the can of worms still isn't fully opened yet.

The balls up has cost them $60 million.

Sounds like it should be done by model number. Using yrs is hard as who know when your car was made. You can often buy the last of old models whilst new model already out, and sometimes see cars that seem to have been first reg years after model was replaced.
Guess they worked on a KISS policy.

C.M.Wlson and the DL guide has to be involved. Death Trap (band 1) Avoid Like the Plague (band 2) Real liability Band3. All Toyotas ever made Band4. Morris Oxfords band 5.

Stupid idiots, the thing that truly makes a car safe or not is the driver.

budgel, Jul 31, 7:29am
Simplistic crap! A great driver can still have someone else involve him in their crash, it is then that the crash safety performance of a car really matters.

mike1345, Jul 31, 7:33am
That's after an accident.

A good driver is more likely to prevent the accident happening in the first place.

They told me the ANCAP is just one factor and they go on Police reports etc so its not only your car but what hits it eg Demio to demio would be a different result to a bus or truck or a power pole ,an overly simplistic way of doing it,One instance i,ve heard of is a december 2011 suv being in a lower band to a jan 2012 identical vehicle.

franc123, Jul 31, 10:42am
Kompletely Incompetent State Stuffup?

pico42, Jul 31, 12:26pm
How?

gazzat22, Jul 31, 2:20pm
In the case of my little runabout a 2004 demio they are all grouped together 1996 to 2006 which cover 2 models and they are classed as group 1 which covers a lot of mid90,s cars and older with no airbags /abs etcBest thing is iff we all write to these d ;; k heads complaining.V R R Specialist team,ACC business Service Centre Box 795 Wellington 6140 and mention that you will refer it to the Ombudsman if they ignore you, I am!

gazzat22, Jul 31, 2:30pm
NO,the simplistic crap is that ACC take little
if any notice of ANCAP ratings, they go on police reports and Monash University research which means any bigger vehicle ,s occupants are safer than in a smaller one.How does one buy a" Safe "car then?.Sounds like the ANCAP rating is just window dressing and ACC nz are the authority who know better than all safety experts

dublo, Jul 31, 2:56pm
Well, a 1999 AU Falcon station wagon is bigger than our 1999 Honda Accord V6, both have 2 airbags and side intrusion beams, but the Falcon is Band 2 while the Accord is cheaper at Band 3!

franc123, Jul 31, 7:04pm
Now, the key to that one is if you really want a AU wagon you buy a 2002 series 3 version, according to ACC this is as safe as a BA and is therefore upgraded to Band 3 while the more dangerous series 1 and 2 versions are still in band 2. Apart from a bigger brakes on the series 2 and 3 they are the same car in terms of safety FFS.

gunny7, Jul 31, 7:58pm
The nzta & acc used their same flawed logic when they decided a few years back that motorcycles over 600cc were inherently more dangerous than those under 600cc, regardless of who was riding it, and how fast it actually was.

franc123, Jul 31, 8:47pm
Damn right. While everybody is getting a discount from the old fee structure the fact remains that some are paying too much and others not enough through no fault of their own. No doubt there are those that say why quibble over such small cost differences between bands but its not the point, these govt depts demand accurate information when dealing with them, why should the reverse not be the case?

dublo, Aug 1, 8:28am
Absolutely correct - well said, franc.

bryshaw, Dec 6, 3:25am
Dunno, just mentioned on Fair Go.
