Once upon a time we got really good 1 April stories and adverts in the papers: BMW had all sorts of amazing fuel-saving "inventions", Qantas had ground-view cameras in their aircraft and the NZ Herald ran stories about how early Maori settlers used a labyrinth of tunnels, created by volcanic action, to get from Auckland to the North Shore. They also wrote about the World War 2 U-Boat which delivered a pair of spies on bicycles to Auckland (one was "Herr Umlaut". )
