What matters is the other driver

Totally on topic. You ARE the other driver!

kazbanz, Dec 25, 12:24pm

kazbanz, Dec 25, 12:25pm
Funny thing is I haven't jelled with it like with other bikes.

peja, Dec 25, 12:30pm
LOL SO True!

loose.unit8, Dec 25, 12:32pm
Amen to escape routes

desmodave, Dec 25, 1:26pm
It would thin the roads out nicely i reckon .

desmodave, Dec 25, 1:29pm
Only when their favorite cow is playing hard to catch .

kazbanz, Dec 25, 1:39pm
Billy I don't agree with the implication of this thread.
There may be unavoidable accidents but I genuinely feel that 99% of the time the innocent victim could have avoided the accident.
sorry if this is a rant but its a pet hate of mine. The whole "it wasn't my fault" mentality irks me.

desmodave, Dec 25, 1:39pm
Now is that great Christmas spirit or what . If he is keen on your generous offer can ya make him eat a big steak before he rides away .

socram, Dec 25, 2:52pm
99% is a bit high kaz. Maybe 75%?

tamarillo, Dec 25, 2:55pm
Agree totally, though 99 is high. It's called hazard awareness and taking best action. Not taught much.

clatty, Dec 25, 3:13pm
I am a dairy farmer work 7days a week,go hardly anywhere 70 yrs old never had accident. Get lost

kazbanz, Dec 25, 3:57pm
LOL--Hey dave did ya hear who gremlins principle sponsor is this year?
he will eat the steak raw.

tamarillo, Dec 25, 4:04pm
Hey clatty, you gotta admit you do put it out there mate so can't really get upset if people disagree! I speak from personal bad habit of doing same!
Let's all be courteous and chilled out over holidays on the road. Have a good one.

brapbrap8, Dec 25, 4:11pm
Riding a bike is a great way to get hazard awareness, I rode a push bike everywhere on the road in my teenage years, and then motorbikes a bit too before getting into cars and I'm sure it taught me 360 degree vision.

I find if you are scanning ahead and around you enough while driving it is virtually impossible for someone to come out of nowhere and surprise you.
It is more important now I drive oversized tractors and things on the road, I constantly look as far ahead as I can for safe places to pull over, and behind to watch out for suicidal overtakers.

trogedon, Dec 25, 4:15pm
Hey Kaz. I'd be happy to drop you off / pick you up (and whanau) if you need it. You've got a great bike there - sport / tourer etc but I'd be loathe to ride someone else's bike.

kazbanz, Dec 25, 4:18pm
Nope matey IMO 99% are avoidable.
But it depends on you being awake and with it.

whqqsh, Dec 25, 5:00pm
Sorry, Dude. If anything goes wrong keep to that story. just tell the missus 'it was Whoosh's fault'

kazbanz, Dec 25, 5:03pm
OHH I WILL. klol all good bro -

socram, Dec 25, 5:03pm
Probably true in terms of the accidents I haven't had! But, how would my wife have avoided getting T boned when a young driver totally lost control in the wet over a blind corner within a 50km limit?

How could I have avoided someone reversing into me at traffic lights in the city?

Sure, I have been awake enough to avoid running over a motorcyclist who dropped his bike on the harbour bridge, or the twit who stopped in the right lane of the Newmarket flyover because she had a puncture - any number of traffic light red light runners, non-signalled lane changers, drivers exiting side roads with insufficient space.

I'm just not so sure what many of the innocent victims could have done when confronted by someone on the wrong side of the road, particularly on a blind corner with Armco barriers cutting off any escape route, or tail ended at traffic lights.

clatty, Dec 25, 5:59pm
We use an old truck trailer to bring hay home from other folks farms. There are others using truck trailer behind tractors as well. The suicide over takers are the worry .Frankly I think the practice of using old trailers behind tractors should be banned. It is asking to much to expect drivers to pull down to 43 KPH for a long time. Also farmers using old trailers not making life any easier for contractors trying to keep the public happy.

brapbrap8, Dec 25, 7:50pm
Well most tractors won't do faster than about 40km/h even without the trailer, but I think 100% that all tractors and trailers need working lights and indicators on them, and farmers need to use them!
I got run off the road by a farmer once, who I was overtaking when he suddenly veered across the road to a driveway in front of me without indicating or even looking over his shoulder.

I have found that making sure I always have my headlights and beacons on, as well as having hazard panels and oversized signs on where applicable (between 2.5m and 3.1m for hazard panels, and 3.1m and 3.5m wide for hazard panels and oversize signs), really gets other road users respect.
If I make an effort to do right by everyone else, everyone else tends to be nice to me as well, I really don't enjoy holding people up!

If I give people the impression they are stuck behind a professional operator who will do his best to let them past where possible, I think it calms people down and reduces the stupid overtaking which is good for everyone, and my stress levels!

With the hundreds of Kiwifruit and Avocado orchards here in the Bay of Plenty, there are always tractors all over the place going from orchard to orchard.
While they may be a bit of a inconvenience at times, I find they will always drive on the shoulder whenever possible and if a queue does build up they will stop and let us through.
There are heaps of yellow lines on the road north out of here and I dont mind putting 2 wheels over them when there is good visibility because at their 40kph Im only over for a second or two. (as long as Plod isnt behind me).
I have no issues with these contractors whatsoever and find them very professional about doing their job.

skiff1, Dec 25, 10:21pm
what exactly is the issue with old trailers?

clatty, May 1, 4:10am
In heavy traffic on state highways its a big ask to expect cars to suddenly drop down to 40 kph behind a tractor towing old trailers like mine. trucks are cheap
