Want to remove cat converter

1996 Nissan Vanette 4WD, 2.0L carby petrol FE engine. The cat converter gets stinking hot (can feel the heat coming off it after a drive when you walk past the van). Has a sensor in it, if I gut the cat what's the story with the sensor? If I simply screw it back in will that cause any problems on a vehicle this old? Cheers

Also this van has spent most of its 160,000km life at 50ks around town till we bought it. possibility it could be partially blocked? Have only noticed the heat over the last few weeks, cheers

carburettor just remove it and retune the engine on the screws to run less rich as it will be smoking black when you remove the cat from overfueling , like my carina did when i poked the crowbar thru the cat that was half molten down anyhow .
that is all you need to do on a carb engine retune it manually and you should use 0.5 liter less fuel for 100km after also.

Cheers intrade, yep this thing loves the gas. will look on the carb to see if there is a mixture screw. the tailpipe at present is really black even after a long drive. So don't won't need to change to a hotter plug or anything? Currently the heat given off this cat is incredible. wouldn't be surprised if it was glowing after a long drive to be honest.

you need to do a carb cleaning once a year with carburoettor cleaner look inside the carb probably black like the tailpipe also , usually best to have old sparkplugs as they faul up from when you clean wash the carburettor thru the engines intake with carb cleaner spray.
And get a manual on how to tune the engine and a stroboscope light if it is required to set ignition , once that is done and the cat removed you then can tune it up to run right. Also check iv valves need adjusting that would also be required to be done as part of tuning it correctly.

Sweet, once its done I'll get the mechanic to check timing and tappets, they are very slightly rattly now. Cheers

Exhaust pipes are all black now, have a look at other vehicles.
It was the lead in the petrol that made them go grey (o:

Yeah, can remember that. had a mate selling his poorly running Lancia with a black pipe, so he sprayed it with zinc. purchaser was impressed with how well it must have been running. lol

Check ignition timing. A retarded ignition will make exhaust run hot.
