If the declared value is over $400, you may have to pay gst before the item is released. You will only have to pay duty if the same item is manufactured in NZ. (roughly speaking(

As above, customs won't sock you for any other taxes unless these taxes will amount to more than $60, which in the case of duty free stuff like most car parts is $400 worth freight inclusive. The biggest hurdle I've found is finding suppliers over there that can actually be bothered sending things here AND knocking their GST off the prices which the crims shouldn't be collecting off export sales. You ask for GST exclusive and freight prices to NZ and they simply don't reply to emails or if they do say they simply don't do it. Its not so much of a problem of course if you have mates or rellies over there prepared to on post stuff for you, even better if Australiawide shipping is free as is often the case.

If you get an Aussie mate to purchase from those same Aussie suppliers how do they buy it without paying GST?

treachug, Apr 26, 4:44pm
Hard & near impossible unless I guess they can prove they are on the way to the border & are leaving with said item. Who knows what the aussie mate does with the part once it leaves the building.

franc123, Apr 26, 4:51pm
They can't, that scenario is obviously different to a 'direct' export sale where its paid for from here and shipped directly to here and not to a third party in Australia first.

NZTools, Apr 26, 5:06pm
If they simply wont ship over the ditch, i can help you out, as we live in Qld and courier stuff over to NZ all the time

gmphil, May 1, 9:54am

Just be aware that the Oz to NZ currency conversion rate that the Customs use is set by them and is generally not very "advantageous" i.e. It is worse than the rate the bank would give ! Factor that in plus the misc customs & NZPO handling / clearance charges

intrade, May 1, 10:21am
try and get them to declear it as sample value 150au$ plus shipping and it will get to your door free of any charges.
the hairpuller is working on a scam to charge for every cent that comes across the borders. but its 360$ total or below that will make it free thill he deploys his scam.

pico42, May 1, 12:46pm
There is no duty on car parts. Only GST.

tony9, May 1, 2:30pm
Don't even think of trying this. Customs are not stupid and if you get caught (you likely will) you will get pinged hard and in the future everything that comes over the border to you will be scrutinised and delayed.

cummingsra1, May 1, 5:34pm
Yep, they are not stupid.
Like no-one has ever thought of under declaring goods value, or declaring them as samples, gifts, no commercial value etc.
Not only do those goods get another look, but all legitimate imports can get caught up in verification of value.
Genuine samples can be admitted with a low value, if they are altered to render them unfit for retail sale. For example shoes can be drilled, clothes can be cut, bellhousings cut/drilled. with the importer's permission of course.
The costs would be (AUD670 @ 0.94 = NZD712.76 x 15% = $106.91 GST plus $46.89 Import Entry Transaction Fee. So $153.80 if entered by Customs at the Mail Centre (and it is treated as a personal import, no mention of a business name or address in receiver's address). Budget another $10 if it arrives by DHL.

gmphil, May 1, 7:00pm
is for personal use is for my weekend toy !

cummingsra1, May 2, 7:58am
There is no distinction in Customs legislation for personal use or business use (I understand there is in Australian legistaion regarding imported goods).
Simply, if it is imported, it attracts GST under Section 12 of the Goods and Services Tax Act 1985 (and possibly duty charged under the Customs & Excise Act 1996).
However if the amount of Customs charges (duty and/or GST) is less than NZD60, Customs charges will not be applied.

yes an that what you have to make it a bell housing is a junk of metal to them not a gearbox if it was a new gearbox you could most likely not declear it for less then 60$ GSt if its 350$ in total then gst is less then 60$ @ 15% i have loads of stuff from china they declear the goods as there cost not what you paid most times.
