I've heard of lithium-ion batteries catching fire while being charged, but not of exploding with enough force to blow doors off etc. Crikey.
Poor bugger, that sucks big time.

Early days of petrol (and gas) powered horseless carriages would have produced more than a few incidents while fueling etc. Once the basics were sorted they proved quite safe.
A gallon of petrol has way more energy than a bunch of lithium based cells.
