And again ffs!

these tourist accidents have always happened, it's just that we're being made more aware of them. Cold comfort tho.

attitudedesignz, Mar 4, 3:45pm
Yes they've "always" happened.

But this many in such a short time span?

I think not.

matarautrader, Mar 4, 4:21pm
And just "seems" to have gotten worse since they tightened up on speed limit. Coincidence im sure.

gammelvind, Mar 4, 5:24pm
That's sad on so many levels, for the injured couple, the loss of a classic car and current almost hysteria about tourists driving.
Somehow we do need more information given to foreign drivers, hopefully those in a position of influence can come up with a viable solution.
The other issue I don't understand is why wouldn't someone fit basic seat belts to their classic car, I know it isn't original etc etc but for goodness sake it's basic safety.

snoopy221, Mar 4, 5:27pm
We had a fatal a while ago with the toy run.
now an incident with americana.

Let's just hope the trend does not continue with the beach hop

dave653, Mar 5, 3:06pm
Bet they couldn't open the doors on the tourists car!
I had a '69 Buick that only had front lap belts. I figured the size and 'non boringness' of it would make it visible.

neville48, Mar 5, 3:47pm
But still only 9 people [too many] die per year from tourist caused accidents when 300 die per year from drunk drivers. Where should our energies lie in looking for a fix.

richardmayes, Mar 5, 3:50pm
Now that all NewZealanders are driving at 101km/h or less thanks to a successful police campaign, it stands to reason that the main hazard on the roads is foreign tourists, right?

Always blow on the pie. Safer communities together.

sr2, Mar 5, 4:31pm
Very sad for all involved.
The fact that the occupants in the modern received only minor injuries rental is a sobering example of how much safer modern cars have become.

lookoutas, Mar 5, 4:42pm
You reckon?

Almost bet the doors on that old Chevy flew open on impact!

Even though having grown up without belts, I wouldn't feel easy traveling in a car without them now.

o0_hamburger_0o, Mar 5, 7:49pm
if the proud owner of these american classics don't wanna bore any holes in their beautiful ride, perhaps they could fit seat covers and some form of racing harness that goes under and around the seat that holds its driver and front seat passenger in their car in the duration of the drive and then remove when arrived at destination, better to be strapped to your seat than out the front windscreen. this way no permanent modification is made. just a food for thought. like what you would use to secure your loads on a trailer.

gunhand, Mar 5, 8:06pm
Not quite sure what you are getting at here? You do realize the occupants of old car were seriously injured and the others hardly at all?
So what if the doors couldn't be opened, the very design of the car has prevented serious injury in this case. Better to trapped for a bit than broken up and have life long problems.
The only times these old car are safe. ish is if they hit something a lot smaller than themselves, hit something solid or of equal size at speed and the outcome will be very different.

tweake, Mar 5, 8:18pm
correct.
locals are just as bad which is sad considering they know the roads etc.

however i would like to know what the stats are compared to number of tourists that are driving here. we may have 300 die from drunk driving but thats out of a large number of drivers. theres only a small number of tourists driving so they should only have a small number of deaths.

also how many complaints and incidents are caused by tourists.
there is a lot of factors in road deaths and focusing on numbers of deaths tends to hide the true nature of the problem.

intrade, Mar 7, 5:24am
whatch tv 1 just finished you could see it 1h later police minister on brekfast tv anouncing apperant mesures for tourist drivers did only just see the last part at 720 so it will be befor that switsching to tv1 plus here now to go back 1 h

urbanrefugee54, Mar 7, 9:01am

300 from drunk drivers ? Only 297 died on the roads last year 2014 and I would be suprised if all of them were drunk !

mals69, Mar 7, 9:08am
FFS all right ! Way out of whack with the overall small % of them on the road. Picking time difference from where they left from big factor - tired.

jason_247, Mar 7, 10:23am
seeing as the total road toll is less than 300 im guessing your making those stats up.

neville48, May 12, 9:54pm
Dont shoot the messenger. This was a stat used by the person being interviewed on telly. No I dont know his name or channel it was on. I dont take that much notice of telly but that is what he said. I am not a politition so do not have to make up stats.
