How long before Ownership Papers turn up?

trogedon, Jun 2, 2:01pm
We've had the Pug for three weeks now and no papers have arrived. The guy who sold it is a dealer so should know what to do re changing them over / have done it promptly. I emailed him a couple of days ago and he's still not replied.

No ownership papers anymore, hasn't been for years that I can remember.

Shouldn't take more than 10 working days for the certificate of registration/legal responsibility (that's all it is, its who gets sent the bills) to show up.

As long as you have the receipted invoice you have your evidence of title. The NZTA tracks only the details of the person it expects to pay the tickets. its not proof of ownership.

There have never been ownership papers, they have always been registration papers. ie, the registered owner. It doesn't mean you own the vehicle. receipt of purchase covers that.

Or my wife! lol

Was it made clear to you that he was doing it for you?
Most dealers will organise this, but the onus is now placed on the buyer to change it over otherwise.
It should be done within 7 days of purchase and the papers take about 10 days after that to be posted to you.
You say you have emailed him a couple of days ago, but remember, it is over a long weekend.
No need to panic yet, just give them a call tomorrow morning.

The cops seem to think they are ownership papers. I was passenger a borrowed vehicle, we got pulled up. The trailer was registered to one person, the tow vehicle another and my car was on the trailer. The cop was giving us funny looks cos we said XX owned the vehicle. Well turns out it was registered still under his mothers name as she used to own it. It wasn't till I suggested that as a possibility that he was happy.

So raises a valid point, you can legally own a car but have it registered to someone else, how would that go down on the side of the road if a cop decided that he thought you had stolen it?

Im sorry troggy but C of O is the responsibility of the buyer not the seller.
So unless it was clearly stated as part of the deal I would assume that the dealer hasn't /won't be doing c of O
PS- Matthews big silver "bracelet" needs repair if you know a "bracelet' repairer you can recommend.
