Cam belt.

I get paid for my expertise, my experience and for using my discretion in deciding what needs doing. not for tightening bolts.

It is often down to the regulations in the country they are sold. Some specify a minimum distance and time between service intervals. When california upped the intervals, manufacturers just upped to match. With same belts. Manufacturers would rather play safe.
100k may be official Toyota distance but Toyota parts man told me not to do past 80k on Corolla and Rav4. In any case most people hit the time factor before the distance. Do you want to risk it?
I have Euro and Jappa. Both have similar service intervals. Except Lotus Esprit but that is very early Belt drive engine.

Uhhh got a source for that?

ladatrouble, Feb 8, 1:10pm
I'm with mechnificent - a waterpump is unlikely to fail in 100,000km, often in a non cambelt engine they will go over 400,000km. Seals should do 200,00km easy. However, since the consumer rights laws were passed in the '90's the cover our arse policy has become the default. For a customer they have to pay for this consumer rights stuff, and get the full job. When allowed to use my discression and experience, I'll assess and replace accordingly.

End of the day go through the excersize of pricing seals and tensioner and belt seperatley then price a kit. lol-and shop around-lol
A recent excersize on one found after being unimpresssed with first pricing source a kit at another source was 8 bucks dearer than a belt at previous source.

However, since the consumer rights laws were passed in the '90's the cover our arse policy has become the default.

And can be reflected in pricing.

Read on Lotus forums where I got this quote.

"By law, California cars from 1995 onward (HSN belts) were required to go 100k miles before replacing the timing belt. That was mandated by California law and Lotus had to comply if they wished to sell cars in California. The extended service interval was NOT a result of some superior construction used on those engines. For the rest of the world, Lotus recommended 50k mile change intervals for the same B-prefix, HSN timing belts. "
A search looking for "california timing belt service intervals" brings up plenty of discussion as to why California has 100k intervals and most other states 60k miles. (for most makes including Jappa) Appears to revolve around a California law requiring cars to do 100k miles before MAJOR service.

I guess I come at it from the point of view that I have to warranty my "work" for up to a year.I just can't risk the chance I made an error.
Now think if I took your position in discussion.
I would get cruisified as being a typical car dealer looking to take shortcuts

mechnificent, Feb 8, 5:38pm
Lol Kaz. I'm a professional mechanic. and I do warrant my work. I work for myself though, and take my time and I take care. I have an excellent record for getting it right.

mechnificent, Feb 8, 5:40pm
You are right about being a car dealer though. good luck with that.
I've always avoided dealing in cars because if I was to do it for profit. the temptations are obvious. So I don't do it.

mechnificent, Feb 8, 5:42pm
And I'm not suggesting you succumb to temptation Kaz. I have been reading your .posts for a long time and have great respect for your ethical approach.

tigra, Feb 8, 6:44pm
That's just one State law. you said some countries which usually means "some".

rotormotor7, Feb 8, 6:47pm
What the heck is a cambelt anyways?

mechnificent, Feb 8, 6:59pm
Something to make your car go faster.

thunderbolt, Feb 8, 7:05pm
The contributing factor to water pump life is cooling system maintainence.
Too much damage to the seal and the grease is gone, bearing follows soon after.
Impossible to say all pumps will last 200 -400 K.
Tensioner quality also has an impact on suggested replacement interval.

gsimpson, Feb 8, 7:35pm
Actually if you being pedantic I wrote country not countries and only gave one example, California.

gsimpson, Feb 8, 7:51pm
I thought that was stripes on the side?

morrisman1, Feb 8, 8:04pm
Its something us piston boys do instead of engine rebuilds.

clark20, Jun 30, 12:52am
Do rotors get over 100,000km anyway? LOL
