that when filling the little radiator bottle ,you only fill it up to the mark indicated. Not all the way to the top. Or bad things will happen.I think cos Im older and in my day you filled the radiators right up I just presumed you did this with newer cars.Told a few people my age 50s and none of them knew either. Ya live and learn

The only thing thats going to happen by fully filling an overflow bottle is heat expansion from the radiator will make that bottle overflow.
After that it will simply settle to it's correct operating height

The radiator still gets filled to the top. The 1st car I had with an expansion bottle was a 74 Corona (40 years). I boiled it once and the expansion tank blew up like a balloon.

A couple extra tips for you OP should you come back.

If you are having to top up the radiator bottle more than say once every year or so, it's likely got a problem, one that may get spectacularly worse all of a sudden and could wreck your engine. So get it checked out.

If you were unsure about topping it up, you may also not realise that it's very important to change that radiator coolant every couple of years if it's green and say every 4 years if it's red or pink. That special coloured coolant isn't so much to stop the radiator freezing (especially in this country) but it protects the delicate and expensive parts in the cooling system from corroding. If this is neglected you can have an expensive bill very fast, if something fails and you cook the engine as a result the vehicle may not even be worth fixing. This happens surprisingly often.

Coolant and getting it changed is cheap, well worth doing regularly.

i think he was refering to an expansion chamber style vehicle.
which much again will let water escape and even it out to the correct level eventually. but some systems only let it dribble out slowly so if it has to dump a liter or so very quickly it can over pressurize and pop a hose in the mean time.
