Is a set on here I'm looking at that fit a 265 70 16. I drive a navara st that is a 255 70 16. Would they be ok to use or a waste of time

Snow chains work best when fitted to the size wheel & tyre that came standard on the vehicle.
Fitting larger wheel &/or tyres can reduce the clearance between them and bodywork or suspension.
Whether the extra 10mm chain over tyre would be a too loose fit I am unsure, but worth a phone call to a tyre place in an area like Queenstown to discuss your question. (Or to confirm any further advice here).

It depends on how adjustable the tyre chains are. Depending on tyre tread wear; the larger tyre has a calculated circumference 40 or so mm larger. It also depends on what condition/ age/ wear the chains have. Look up snow chain adjusters. http://www.snowsweat.co.nz/ etc

Don't chains say what figment they are for? Or is there no box left?

Yeah they are for 265 70 16 but was wondering if they would work on 255 70 16

ask the seller- should say what sizes they fit on the container or ask what size chain they are and look up a fitment chart

yes they will, you'll probably find they will be in the first loop on the back hook and the second on the front - make sure you clip the excess chain on the back hook in or it will damage the underguards

snow chains are very forgiving in fitment, they'll accommodate quite a large difference in tyre sizes before you have to upsize the chains
