Using a USA plate in NZ

I know a guy who paid for a personalised plate to correspond with his imported USA muscle car, and has simply left on the USA plates.
He has been stopped a few times and each time gets let go, since the plate matches NZ's LTSA database.
Technically illegal surely, but been driving with it on for years so far and hasn't had a ticket yet.

no promotion not worth the effort ?
should be fined and plate confiscated !

bumfacingdown, May 29, 3:07pm
Yeah but hang on, if the plate has the same properties as a NZ one (size, ability to reflect etc) and the purpose of a number plate is to identify, what has been lost?
Nothing, you can still identify, with the purchase of a personalised plate no revenue has been lost.

gmphil, May 29, 3:10pm
I see ur point BUT law says ! cant quote exactly be must be issue by or some thing .
like on tv cop show if that plate wrong they take stop u saying sorry in do again !

gmphil, May 29, 3:12pm
or is he telling pokie to op in using his pp.
as it must be not quite right for police to notice !

maybe I watch to much tele don't usa plates have like states printed on them on them ?

tgray, May 29, 3:27pm
He is not telling porkies.
Seen his car at some of the car shows and yes, the USA plate numbers match the white Rego label in the window.
They are just random numbers, but he wanted to be able to leave the USA plate on.

lookoutas, May 29, 3:28pm
I know off plenty who do that.
Only problem is, it gives them an excuse to pull you up.
Sensible cops would understand, plonkers could be plonkers.

What about the ones with a sports car that have the plate painted on?

bumfacingdown, May 29, 3:37pm
Yup, "the law says"

kazbanz, May 29, 3:40pm
THAt ^^^^^^^^ is my understanding of matters.--as long as number/letter size is correct etc

tintop, May 29, 3:45pm
Nope.

(But to be fair Kaz, you are rarely wrong in these matters. )

"If your vehicle requires a front and rear registration plate then it must display them and they must bear the same set of characters. Only registration plates issued by the NZTA are legal, which means you can't make your own plate or purchase one from an overseas website for example. Displaying a non-approved registration plate or something that could be mistaken for plates could mean a maximum fine of $5000."

http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/factsheets/71/registration-plates.html

In my dealings with RTL Signs - I understand that sign manufacturers are not to cut characters using the same font as used on the NZ plates either.

He obviously has the right attitude, unlike most of the fools on tv, when he does get pulled up.

tintop, May 29, 4:16pm
The end may come when the system that reads the plates for speed cameras and toll roads throws a wobbly, and a human has to try and decipher the characters.

johotech, May 29, 4:43pm
Cop probably couldn't be bothered with all the paperwork required.

les6, May 29, 4:48pm
i know a few who have done that too, just register whatever is on the plate as a pp.they don`t even have to pull you over to run a check these days,as long as you behave yourself?I also no someone who drives a vette with no front plate and has never had a ticket. yet?

bumfacingdown, May 29, 5:14pm
Tui

fordcrzy, May 29, 6:23pm
people like the cops need to get effing real. what is the purpose of a plate? thats right it is so the car can be identified. if the plate can be identified in the states then why not NZ? do new zealanders have different eyesight to the yanks? if a car was involved in a robbery would the U.S plate be unreadable? NO! this monopoly on the most boring plate style in the world needs to end. god even australia has different plate styles within the same state eg NSW has black on yellow.black on white and even a small plate for the front of sportscars. but in nz NOOOOOOOOOOOO that would lead to all sorts of things happening. yeah right whatever

nzdoug, May 29, 7:02pm
Its illegal.
Cops enforce to protect "Personalized Plates"monopoly.

esky-tastic, May 29, 7:08pm
Nice rant bro!

Did you know Yanks only need one plate on their cars in most states?

Oh, and our plates are reflective - flash-as!
And we still have the old black ones around and HEAPS more personalised plates than Aussie will ever have.

So not boring eh.

tgray, May 29, 7:08pm
We have many different legal plate styles in NZ.
I just put some NZ Euro styled plates on a car for a customer recently.
Overseas plates are not LTSA approved as far as size, reflecting qualities etc, so why should they be legal?

petermcg, May 29, 7:09pm
Theres some Old Women on here. I have an ilegal no plate on my E39, its a german made euro plate and I dont have any issues with any one about it, why do people worry so much about simple things, I have a USA vehicle also and have thought about using my US plates, its a grand idea.

esky-tastic, May 29, 7:10pm
Yet to hear of anybody having cops protecting 'personalised plate monopoly'.

Beside, the dudes I know HAVE a personalised plate - just it matches the US ones on their car!
So no loss there eh?

tgray, May 29, 7:19pm
So you break the law and don't worry about it.
I guess that's your choice.

nzdoug, May 30, 7:07am
I had German Euro Plates and got a ltter from the cops telling me to change it.
Heaps of threads about this on car forems.

It occurs to me that the optical recognition systems used by speed cameras etc function more efficiency if the characters on the plate exactiy match the fonts stored in the electronic systems library.

An unrecognised font will flag a human operator is need to determine what it is, as happens when a plate is partially obscured by a towball etc.

The local plate legislation is pretty clear I'd have thought, only NZTA permanent issued plates displayed in silver on black or black on white reflectorised type are permitted, regardless of their original appearance,or other registrar approved plates in other fonts, sizes or colours as issued by PP, and unaltered since being issued by PP, are allowed. Govt issued plates can take the form of a label where a metal plate cannot be fitted as long as it meets the appearance criteria for Govt issued plates. Any other plate designs aren't permitted without registrar approval, end of story.
