Replace webbing on carseat belt

flyingpencil, Jul 27, 7:47am
I have found a local dealer, now I need to know if anyone can install it? Or do I need to get a "qualified" person to do it?

More info needed, are you talking about a baby carseat or a seatbelt assembly ?

flyingpencil, Jul 27, 8:01am
Sorry. Driver's seatbelt of my car. Toyota Corolla Hatch, 1999

treachug, Jul 27, 8:04am
Do you mean rewebbing the original belt assembly or replacing the original belt assembly with another assembly?

gmphil, Jul 27, 8:05am
matter of 4 or 5 bolts should be able to do urselfs

intrade, Jul 27, 8:06am
so dou you have a new seat belt would have a real and a buckle and 2 eyes for bolts on older standard seat belts?
Also did you plug in the new one to check if it latches on the buckle of the old original one?

The mechanism works fine, but the webbing is a little frayed. So just replacing the webbing.

intrade, Jul 27, 8:12am
you cant replace the webbing. its made and tested accidents. you wont be testing it if it holds you in a seat when you crash, So there is no such thing as replacing the webbing on seat belts. whole unit with webbing only.

Michael Fiddymont Ltd in Brougham st hopefully are the ones you found. I believe they are approved to rewebb the belt (dont know of anyone else in Chch that do it. or approved to do it) . Fiddymonts should be able to remove & replace etc. its their job.

yes if somone puts there copany name on it to certify it but i bet you they wont use your webbing , they are not gona singe a liability document on stuff they dont supply. i sure as hell would not.

Save yourself a whole heap of time and money and just head down to the Wreckers. You'll be able to pick and choose the right one for your car.

Wrong, it is possible but the outfits that do it generally won't reweb units over 10yo, or if they consider the rest of it is too worn, particularly the retractor spring and locking system. It may be simply be more economical and convenient to replace the whole thing even if it can be rewebbed depending on the model and type of belt.

I have done it before. The big issue was once you get to the end of the reel (full extension of belt) to make sure that you put a suitable stopper through the slot that the webbing dead ends in. If that sucker retracts with no belt in it. well its a tedious job winding the spool back, that before you even decide what position it was in before it let go! Some cars needed it as they have specialised fittings in way of the adjustable B pillar mounts. The generic kits don't fit some models.

flyingpencil-Its one of those jobs that "should " be straightforward but things go very wrong very fast. Its the silly stuff that catches people out.
Clips back in correctly (in the reel). Correct pin for that reel. Correct belt orientation. Then theres getting the pillar panelling in and out correctly
Its a 50/50 chance of getting it right if you just guess. get it wrong and the only way the belt works is with a half twist in it.
That's not to mention the possibility peas covers off. You have to secure the retractor reel or its hours and hours getting the correct tension on the reel.
ALL thing and keeping in mind iits safety equipment you are playing with.

Good service at reasonable prices and a very decent helpful guy to deal with.

Re webbing is carried out in the aviation industry. Most gliders have a 10 to 12year life. Some aircraft 10 years. The re webbing is carried out by a certified company and has paper work that certifies the work carried out.

Note 14 at the bottom, re webbing or repairs are very unlikely to be unwarrantable
Grab one from the wreckers or universal one from repco
