I have a Mitzi Pajero that runs fine when the petrol tank is full but starts to run rough when it only has 3/4 of a tank left. Missing small backfires etc Any ideas much appreciated.

Start by replacing the fuel filter if it hasn't been done in the last couple of years. Also, is it a GDi engine?

sounds like pressure problem, as in tank, try new petrol cap, run 98 octane.

Do these have in tank or out of tank pumps? Out of tank pump could suggest slight hole in pick up tube

i would actuarly look at evap purge system as the first thing with that sort of symptom discription. what year are we talking here ? because elec 70 cars are not alowed to vent to atmosphere since a long long long time now, that brether pipe goes to the evap purge valve and a open evap valve would flood the engine every now and then with fumes from the tank, when the ecu is not comanding the valve open, then it wont lean out the fuel as it does when it commands the evap valve open it knows and reduces fuel to be injected for that time .
So actuarly removing the petrol cap will help with the problem if indeed it is a permanent stuck open evap purge valve. Because then the fumes are escaping out the filler and wont make it to the engine . Hope that is no to much starwars as thats normal system of any 80s early 90s onwards petrol vehicle function.

Check fuel lines if any black stuff in line replace In tank pump common for the brushes inside pump to fall apart
