The interior is very Mazda like and what you would expect from an MX5 but the exterior is a bit too creative, the lines and headlight treatment make me think Lexus.

I'm not ashamed to say that I quite like it!

That or a new Mustang? They are not much different in price.

I like it too - Nice to see the soft-top back, the retractable hard top was probably a bit top-heavy and expensive. Weight savings are impressive with the old one being only 1167kg anyway.

Would be a more interesting toy than a GT86/BRZ. Wonder if it will be any less expensive than the old one, which at $55k was a bit rich.

Supposed to be less expensive than the old one. There is also supposed to be a 2 litre n/a version.
There were plans for Alfa to get Mazda to produce a badge-engineered turbo version, but Mazda pulled out of the deal. I guess that leaves them the option to produce their own badged mazdaspeed versions once the model line has been in the marketplace for a while. Yanks always seem to want large cup-holders, bigger seats, and more power. The rest of the world might favour low weight, attractive pricing, and good handling.
They are still to be made in Mazda's Hiroshima plant.

Love it. The idea and execution are spot on. But wait.
It will be a fiat 124 spider! They pulled from it being alfa as they are developing another new platform for alfas that will be ALL REAR WHEEL DRIVE. And will develop roadster from that.
So fiat 124 spider, with Mazda reliability but fiat/ Alfa engine! Perfect.

mazda have said that japan an non US will only get the 1.5 128Hp version. and the colour options are TERRIBLE! one red, 3 whites, two greys, black and a mom jeans blue which looks stupid. mazda screwed the pooch with this one im afraid.

grangies, Mar 15, 4:36pm
Are there any new cars out there with pop up head lights?

tamarillo, Mar 15, 4:42pm
Damned if there is! Think it's something about the regulation of softening the blow for pedestrians making it almost impossible to use them. Hmmmmm.

inkapuka, Mar 15, 4:48pm
Still would be cool

fordcrzy, Mar 15, 5:10pm
THE NEW MX5 HAS A PYROTECHNIC BONNET that goes off when you hit a ped. thats how they got the low bonnett past the beurocrats.

tgray, Mar 15, 7:55pm
Doesn't get my heart racing.

richardmayes, Mar 15, 10:12pm
Doesn't look quite as wide, low or sexy as those publicity photos released earlier suggested. Still nicer than the abomination of the previous generation though. Looks like it is intended to look best with an optional extra front spoiler etc etc?

timmo1, Mar 16, 12:42pm
The 1.5l model has smaller and skinner wheels so won't look quite as pumped as the 2.0l model.

inkapuka, Mar 16, 6:07pm
Best bit is still has 6 speed manual with short shift not a stupid automatic with floppy paddles

motig, Mar 17, 2:38pm
Like it, actually prefer it over the original.

mike1345, Mar 18, 8:42am
I like it.

melonhead1, Apr 26, 10:18am
It needs something like a 2.5l straight 6 wedged into it to make it cool.
