As well with the number of times those hubos crap out, the chances of the speedo and the hubo not matching is pretty high if you are on your second or third hubo.

Don't understand what they're waffling about. As far as I remember, truck mileage is exclusively measured and ruc paid according to the hubo reading, and the speedo very often doesn't match.

As far as I know, If fitted with a hub meter, then THAT overrules any odometer readings

Ive had the same letter in the past. When you change a hubo they go back through their records and check if there is a discrepancy between hubo and speedo readings and try to say the hubo was running slow so you owe unpaid RUC. I disputed mine as I believed my speedo was running fast and they accepted my explanation. Ive read on other threads that speedos usually do run fast for some reason, ie when they show 110kmh youre really only doing 100kmh.

The Odometer part of the gauge is spose to be factory correct
The speed indicator part is factory set to be between 2kph & 4kph fast to avoid being prosecuted for ppl accidentally exceeding the speed limits
1 of the odditys in that is that no one can easily & fully allow for tyre & instrument wear, so this can become a defence in court for the average joe bloggs.

Speedos can run faster from factory - safety factor. More so if someone wound speedo back and took needle off and did not put it back in same place. One of Mr Makita products good for evening the score.

Yes, the mongrels got me for $460, when a hubbo, fell off, i got a replacement, did the paper work and then got a bill. I queried it, stating that, the very reason we have to have hubbos, is because , by their own reckoning, speedos are not accurate, the girl said , we will look at it, next day i got a letter, saying i had 14 days to pay up, or i would be in court.

If you got a letter the next day it was already in the post, written before you called.
When they do COFs do they record odo and hubodometer readings? That would show how well they had matched in the past.

There is a certain percentage that they use as a tolerance between the hubbo and speedo, if its out of that percentage they start asking questions as they think your taking your hubbo of the vehicle.

You can apply to have the RUC determined on Speedo alone, and dispense entirely with the Hubodometer. I have done this . on the advice of the local testing station

90% of all vehicles are over so the hubo will be less

Aren't the Aussies sensible by charging diesel mileage tax at the pumps?

Yeah, then heaps more paperwork for farmers etc getting it back

The government has looked at that and deemed it to much of a expense to police, I have worked in WA and there we have 2 different types of diesel, one for the tractors and a different one for the road vehicles, it is a pain to keep track of it all. And what happens here to all the earthwork machines, fishing boats, pleasure craft, tractors, combines, mowers etc that are diesel if the RUC is taxed at source?

If the hubometer is on the left hand side of the vehicle and you spend all day going around roundabouts. Then the hubometers doing more distance than the average of the vehicle which is taken off the gearbox which is in the center of your vehicle.
Tell them that.
