Haha, i got 12g as a tradein for truck. Cockrams sure knew how to charge for the manual, and initially did not want to sell me one at all.

I am with Mr weston on this sounds like a fluid pressure problem. I would recommend a transmission shop they can stick gauges on check the pressures. Check Trans fault codes first

Pretty sure a safari will still select a gear and drive with the Trans ecm removed.

+1 i was told that at the time too.
re fault codes, the light in mine (power /auto mode switch from memory)was very faint and could only be seen if looking real hard .

a 97 safari i'm not 100% but I don't think it will have it's own controller or even share with the ECM. If it has anything it will be for shift points but I doubt it is that clever, probs just mechanical linkage to valve body.
I go with a trans pump pressure check.

They've done all that. Fluid pressure and levels were all fine. There were no fault codes.

Thank you! That's incredibly helpful! Appreciate the extra effort there.

Did they test it while faulting ?
totalimp,

No. Only one garage has been able to replicate the fault, and their suggestion was to pull the trans out, take it apart and send it away. It's not like I can carry a diagnostic machine around in it with us and when it stops at the intersection whip it out and get on my hands and knees either unfortunately. Lol

google eastern automatics you should be able to do a query via email- or check in with them Dave and Craig have years of experience with the ole -too hard basket-K

the joys of intermittent problems. Ahhhh. Leave it with them for a few days
totalimp,

We did that too! When it first happened a year ago. Thats how intermittent it is! It's booked in tomorrow for some guys to look at the inhibitor switch and we'll go from there.

UM i am no mechanic but my logic suggests if it is intermittent then chances are it is electrical, mechanical problems are normally consistent and or evidence of failure can be found in fluids or filters.

Is it a full electric control box or mechanical. If full electric has the Pedal position switch been checked and adjusted this needs to be adjusted and working correctly as it controls shifting. Also the inhibitor switch needs to be adjusted correctly. Wouldn't hurt to strip the loom and inspect wiring. Putting a scope on switches and sensors will help. Of course this is for a full electronic auto. A mech auto won't have an APS

Totalimp- I had a little brainwave. being a 97 could the shifter be mechanical? Is it possible that you actually aren't putting the vehicle into drive--ie its actually still in neutral due to worn linkages? It does line up with your description that put it to low and row up the gears it goes fine. equally if its an electrical sensor maybe that's still detecting you want neutral. I do though still feel its best to take it to Nissan.

A wee update - Agian today this place couldn't replicate the fault. But these guys checked the control linkages and did something that allowed itself to realign, which it did change a little. He's hoping that fixes the problem, that the misalignment was causing it but apparently it all looks in good nick and nothings worn/damaged/obviously faulty. So it's good news in terms of there's nothing major/obvious/damaged. But bad news is that we don't know if it's fixed or not. Time will tell though i guess. We drove it a fair bit this arvo and didn't have a problem, but thats not really unusual. For now, I'm happy.

Bare with me - good theory but we don't always take it out of drive when the problem happens. I.e, sitting at the lights, still in D, light goes green, dump foot, revs but doesn't go, shift to 2, still doesn't go, shift to 1 and it goes. We don't put it in N at lights. All research indicates control linkages. If the problem persists i'll be taking it to Nissan. for now i'm content there's no major problems and my beloved isn't at risk of collapsing.
I'm really grateful for the help & advice on here, it's been amazing guys, thank you so much.

Interesting - i'm guessing control linkages are mechanical rather than electrical. Interesting school of thought, thanks.

had a 92 rvr once and trans pack out ,brought new /second hand one from t boned car so new was ok . fitted but one of the three plugs were different . swap plugs re wired . more than intermitted for me tho the same problem . stop at lights it turns green but no go pull back too first on stick is away it went but would not get overdrive . tried swapin wirers and ecu got no were in sold . urs sound electrical as if it were lingage it would of gone when u pull back to second as shouldn't be that much out alignment

Well it's still broken. Next stop is either an auto electrician or Nissan. Will wait until new year probably.
