2 windscreens in 3 days.

bigmuz1, Sep 27, 6:24am
Fitted a windscreen to a customer's car on Tuesday, he was back Friday for a new screen. He'd followed our advice about getting new wipers, but someone at an un-named auto supply store removed the old wipers, leaving the metal arm sticking up on the springs, bit of a bump and the arm springs down giving the screen enough of a whack to leave a big starburst crack.
Any other "do the job again" stories out there?

Man thats shabby. Hope the auto store footed the bill?

There isn't enough room on this message board for any of us car painters to tell our 'do it again' stories.

My quickest "turnaround" was 3 hours from leaving to them being back.

They did, but had a go at the "it was like that when it got here" line first.

I once had an old 4x4 Ram. Somehow the tired old trans split the case in half. Removed it by myself on the front lawn along with the transfer case, mashed half of one finger, and took it to WAER. They re-cased and kitted the trans and charged me a pretty penny. I put it all back in the truck and fired it up. Oil gushed out. Whole lot out of the truck again and back to the shop. Oops, forgot a plug behind the torque converter. All I got was a "sorry 'bout that".

Dad was asked by a customer to supply a very expensive gearbox (was a long time ago),, ordered it , customer came got it.
Rang about 5or6hours later to say gearbox was completely seized, munted on first drive.
needless to say, box was shipped dry and guy hadn't filled it with oil.

Just WOW!

The reason we get silly warning labels all over the place now.

I would never use that fitting service. I even bought a Multi Tool so I didn't have to last time I bought wiper blades just so I didn't have to.

when i was engine reconditioning we got asked to do an urgent crank grind on a Mk3 zephyr by the ford dealers. no problem 30 minutes after we got it took it back and supplied new bearings (mechanic had forgotten to put oil in) 2 hours later go asked to do it again as the 2 mechanics had forgotten to put the sump plug in, but they did put oil in. cost them a few beers

Yeah some asian driver hit the back of my car in a carpark, and it took about a month to get it fixed due to the asian guy doing the 'no speaka engrish, no unastand insurwance' thing when my insurance co called him, despite him having great english at the time.
Couple of weeks later my missus was rushing to work and backed it into one of my trailers on the driveway and stufed the bumper again.

Re dos. the curse of the poor painter.
They happen for a multitude of reasons and very rarely goes wrong till your laying on the clear. When the clear goes on basically thats it till well dried. Although we do know the odd trick when certain things happen.
I seem to have a run of bad luck, weeks go by all is good then in one week everything you touch goes wrong.
Had to re do a boot lid other day because of condensation build up in mask. Dribbled on the clear lol. And all of an inch away from where it wouldnt have been seen.
Try BC CCin a full 3 layer white pearl respray. You stress for days before, and on the day. not good for ones mental health.

One of the car companies that I was working with had commissioned a new body shop weld line. After commisssioning we where slowly ramping up production when it was found that one of the weld guns was set to test and was not welding the rear panel of the vehicle. So there was about 400 brand new vehicles in the yard that had to be stripped down, re-welded, painted and re-assembled. A few red faces on that one.

I had repainted the bonnet of my car in Dulon , thought it was dry 3 hours later so cleaned up & chucked the rag that had thinners on it on the bonnet & shut the door . Next morning it was stuck to the paint . Had to do it again .

gunhand, Sep 27, 12:32pm
LOL, I learnt that one 30 years back. Was prepping a boot lid and walked off leaving a rag on it. It ate through about 8 layers of old paint. It creates hours more work.

A mate has just done that to his Charger. Lucky it was only primer too.

Years ago a stock agent collected his Valiant off us after we fixed it. He got about 2 miles before he pranged it again.

Well that speaks volumes, doesn't it.
