Do you actually just mean re-vinning or reregistering a deregistered vehicle? How old?

A basic compliance inspection will cost about $400 and you pay another $300 for 6 months rego--allowing there are no mechanical issues

Good reason why owner not bothered fixing it. Reliability not a strong point, indeed it should be easy to find ex owners who will tell you to run. Having said that if your a fan the series one will at least be simpler with less electronics and I'd think really good ones are getting sought after due to age and iconic status. Re vining is a lot more thorough than a wof so good chance they'll find plenty wrong.

If there are any rust repairs required, just make sure there is a repair certificate issued. The re-compliance is very thorough and they will look for any traces of rust.and expect them to be fixed. Just have a good talk through with the local centre first as it is way beyond a WoF.
You'll need evidence of it having been on the road in NZ before and I also had to get a JP to confirm I was the legal owner before the compliance centre would even look at the vehicle.

RE #2 smac - revin vs reregd a de-reg? Whats the difference? As soon as a car lapses (deregd) it needs a new vin. End of story!?

Not at all. If a VINed vehicle lapses, it gets reregistered, but will retain the existing VIN number. However a lot of vehicles being reregistered are old enough not to ever had an internationally recognised VIN so they have a new NZ one assigned. A registered vehicle with a VIN that loses or damages the plate could also be re-vinned, without being reregistered.
. and probably a bunch of other combinations.

Sounds like I'm being pedantic, but the reason all this confusion around this topic exists is because the public and the agents often end up talking at cross purposes. They use the same terms but each mean something entirely different. Then they are left wondering why a re-reg is gonna cost them $1500 when some other guy told them a VIN plate costs $60.

So, with my car which I got which is de-regd due to lapsed rego can still use the original VIN because the VIN has not been destroyed (the tag is attached under the dashboard right at bottom of windscreen). If it passes the check or I get it fixed so it does they can reuse it?

The answer is 'it depends'. Depends on who issued that number, when, why, etc etc. Doesn't effect the cost of the procedure much at all, it's the rest of it that can get expensive (i.e. repairs needed, newer than 1990 car etc). The short answer to all of these questions is 'find a TSD agent you trust and talk to them'.

Hmmm OK cool fair enough. Some interesting info. I'm intending to take it down one day to be inspected but firstly I will go chat with one of them and find out the complete procedure. Cheers.

I am familar with RRs having fixed up a disco but always wanted to restore a S1 RR , no airbags or ABS or cats , he spent mega $ at Wgtns Toy Shop on donk & box but the rust was the last straw so parked it for 4 years intending to fix , still got origonal plates on it though . rego has lapsed .
