I have a 96 Pajero with 4M40 diesel. Warm mornings starts straight away and runs beatifuly, no problems. Cooler morings ( under say 11 or 12 degrees) Starts and runs well for about 1 to 2 minutes then puffs white smoke and runs erraticly then stops. Glow up again and starts after a few revolutions and may or may not run smoothly, then eventually stops smoking and runs well for the rest of the day. The fact that it first starts and runs well on 4 cylinders has me thinking compressions are ok. Has recently had new glow plugs and glow timer. I want to emiminate all I can before splashing out on a pump recondition. Your input will be most welcome. Cheers.

Id be fitting clear lines to the return fuel line from the pump. Could be the front seal sucking air until its easier for it to suck fuel. Seen this a few times on the 4m40 pump. Runs fine for a couple of minutes until its got a pump full of air. Then runs rough and stalls. Once restarted normally fine till the next cold start or morning.

do what post 7 said and report back result . if looks like air unscrew fuel filter and look for black fuel in there.

Can understand that but how does air temperature affect it?

did you ever check valve clearance? i went to mitsubishi years ago in whangarei when they where at the old abandoned place in town. asked for the valve clearance for a 4m40 , they sayd we dont do that and wished me good luck with it.

its more like the diesel gets hot and expands the matal ever wondered what the noises is on houses with metal roof . dock. dock when the sun starts to blast on it , its called metal expansion and contraction, basic engeneering phisycs . Formula 1 engines do not even turn over untill the oil is heated they are so tight tollerances and only last 1+- race anyhow .

Try this. When you start it up. Do the glowplug thing, then turn the engine over for only one or two revs. Then back to 'stop'. Then do the glowplug thing again and then start it like normal.
See if that helps.

you could also just listen how long till the clowplug relay clicks. i did hear them on some nissan safari click after 1 secound , the light on the dash means squat to how long it glows. our dacia sandero 2010 model we did have brand new it had a glow plug light on the 1.2 petrol same cluster as diesel have , it just shows glow display on dash there is no glowstuff on a 1.2 petrol. its just bull so the driver waits visually the time befor starting
