Whimpy useless wreckers

mrfxit, May 14, 8:26am
What the heck happened to the knowledgeable parts guy at most wreckers that could match up different brands & or models to get what you needed.

A simply thing like finding s/h back shocks for my e24 Nissan caravan is a nightmare so far.
They look at their computer & go "no we don't have those in stock" but you know dang well that they are going purely on the factory part numbers/ exact model.

No blimin imagination any more these guys.
Back when I was working for wreckers & engine reconditioners, we KNEW what parts were the same or better suited for various models or had the brains to SEE they would fit.

Already spent too much on it so have to cut costs somewhere, gee's most of whats been replaced so far are going to outlive the van as it is anyway, including s/h parts.

Oh & thats WITH the old shock in my hand.

not dissing your rant but / that's what zebra and pickapart and the like are for .

intrade, May 14, 8:56am
ok i can tell you what has happened , most wreckers have closed up shop for loads of reasons to wide a reason to name it all and i stick to just the facts and hope you can fugure the rest without the details.
Right thats one reason another is i was going to look at buying the taumarunui wreckers but desided not to when looking at the river behind the place and looking at laws and bylaws from the council as i know the shipping jard in whangarei cant be sold as it would close down instantly by enforcing water polution bylaws
Anyhow it got sold and the new owner does not know what they exactly have in stock but one of his workers does, So these new owners likely have not much of a clue of what they have and the owners who had in there heads what fit wats has gone from the picture.

taumarunui wrecker have loads of that years stock and horopito motors also has a quite some mid 90s stuff in there paddocks

intrade, May 14, 9:10am
while we ar at it that you dont happen to have a working asus p5b delux motherboard

mrfxit, May 14, 9:22am
Yea govt regs can be really frustrating at times.
Most of it's fair enough in concept but often goes too far with gobbledegook & red tape

mrfxit, May 14, 9:28am
.
Pickapart Hamilton mostly has fairly late model gear & their prices are not exactly cheap considering theres no comeback what so ever for any reason.

It's the same today across the board in most industries I reckon.
When I was working in the cycle wholesale trade 20yr ago just as a storeman , I knew what was in stock (without looking at a computer) , when the next lot were due as the orderer told me (part was not just ordered because the computer told him we were at "min stock"), and I even knew what other competitor's products were and what $ I could actually get for our stuff.
Nowadays the rep's have no idea was is actually in stock, the guy on the phone is the same, the boss knows nothing about their product line at all, the "product manager" does, but does not want anyone else to have any of his info.
Too many "set jobs" now and no crossover for when someone is away, and a distinct lack of physical product knowledge.

mrfxit, May 14, 11:27am
Yea yea, just picking on Holden/Ford because it's convenient

mrfxit, May 14, 11:27am
Hell yea,
Imagine how many ppl would be upset to know their fav 95 to recent model Holden was in fact a Daewoo based world car AND . that the new Ford Focus S 2ltr 4cyl had more power then their 2014 -ish Holden v8 model

I know exactly what you mean.
A few years ago I needed a brake booster for an 88 Corvette.
Got quoted something like$500 from a brake specialist.
I thought ouch. Went to Pick-a-Part & got the EXACT same part, right down to the part no. from an old Commodore. Cost something like $20
The original Vette part was manufactured in the same Aussie factory.

Well that's called research isn't it, if you know what the OEM number is you are way ahead, googling the number can reveal all sorts of information about the part and what its fitted to. Good luck with getting second hand shocks for a Nissan Caravan, those and the other similar one called the Urvan were sods to get spares for even 20 years ago when they were relatively new. Life is so much easier with a Hiace.

2wd e24 rear shocks. $50 pair including freight. from nelson. :) old school dismantler.

ozz1, May 14, 4:38pm
ps . know where youre coming from. been waiting 2 days for auckland dismantller to come back to me . on guarrenteed $3-4grand sale. emails sent . 3 calls made. but no reply. ? WTF?

h.e, May 14, 5:39pm
.

My guess is your a small fish in a big tank. Why drop tools for a one off $3-4k sale when there are customers waiting who spend that per month. I have a mate in the parts game, he wont drop tools for joe public

mrfxit, May 14, 6:43pm
Success at last, not my 1st choice but probably the best deal for new.
Did a big ring around the parts dealers & had quotes from $140 all the way up to $485 for ONE pair.
All of the higher quotes were for upgraded shocks but for each of the 3 versions available, there are huge differences in price.
Some of them were wanting slightly more for a single std OEM shock, then I paid for the pair.
All good in the end I hope but blimin heck, theres no reasonable reason why they wouldn't work a lot better then the OEM's I had in there & probably going to out last the van.
I can easily pull them apart by holding in both hands (yes vertical holding).

mrfixit--whimpy/useless Nahh sorry matey.
When you were in the industry if someone came in for a set of shocks for your van the cost of new parts was extrordiinary and we didn't have the CGA etc breathing over our shoulder.
So you would hand over your sample and the guy would head "out back" and find a set with more or less the same length and pretty much the same end fittings.
No doubt a big improvement over the knackered factory stuff.
Nowadays aftermarket stuff is cheap and if mr wrecker doesn't supply the exact part for that exact car he stands to be taken to DT

ozz1, May 15, 4:56pm
.
sorry . but your guess is WRONG. 40 years in busness. are you one of these uselesss DORKLAND dismantlers. WHY ?would you be in business if you lose a sale.? of any scale. as I said. 3-4g sale. regardless of /or their attitude. glad you arent in the sales programme. still havent heard back after another 2 calls today. PARTS orderded new . $5g. and on the way. well done . NOT.

ozz1, Jan 29, 11:56am
