Green

Why do the NZ New car dealers not offer cars coloured GREEN?

ianab, Sep 11, 6:16pm
Not in fashion this season.

nightboss, Sep 11, 6:20pm
All the website offer the same bland range.
White, Maroon, Dark Blue, Silver, Grey, Black.

Where are the happy colours of the past?

gunhand, Sep 11, 6:29pm
Just had a quick look through new cars, plenty of colours available. Maybe they can not spell Red, Green or Gold?

2sheddies, Sep 11, 6:34pm
There is some reason why most are either white or silver. I think it's either because it's cheaper to paint them those colours, or because they offer good visibility. Though I wouldn't necessarily say silver is the easiest to see on an overcast day!

Some years ago it was proven that green cars were involved in more accidents than other coloured cars. Please note "cars"
I thought this was a bit of BS, then remembered a few incidents when I was a transport operator in a rural area.
One of the memorable ones occurred when driving my truck with the stock crate on, in the middle of a winding road with quite long grass on the sides, (the road was only about 1 and a half truck widths) keeping an eye out for oncoming traffic (a rare event in this neck of the woods) and next thing, a GREEN Morris Minor appeared from nowhere, in front of my brand new Thames Trader, Lucky, no prang. Had a yak and he reckoned he would drive with his lights on in future. Not long after met him again. Different car different colour. Said he'd had too many near misses.

Nice but Mrs Nightboss wants it "greener". Emerald Green.

gmphil, Sep 11, 7:58pm
still don't see a green car gold in bronze

You can get new Mitsi Mirages in a colour similar to that. Pity about the rest of it though.

nightboss, Sep 11, 8:07pm
I showed her a picture of a green Mitsi Mirage 5 minutes ago and she is still laughing. Next.

But yes, great work in finding one new green car in 2 hours.

Green never has been a 'reliable' colour. There was a study done many years ago with (of all things) pencils. People were asked to use different coloured pencils that were all made in the same machine just different colours then quizzed on how well they performed (lead breakage, lifespan etc) & the results were red was best followed by yellow, blue & far & away the worst was green (think about pencils you've seen & you'll click as to why they are the colours they are & the ratio of those). This aversion to green follows to many other areas including cars & manufacturers know this well offering very few options of green compared to colours.

Often its a case of a shade of green being offered in a brand new model, and then it gets dropped when the midlife facelift occurs, a similar thing happens with yellows and oranges. Buyers in this country simply don't like In Your Face colours it seems, a pity as a bold colour can really enhance a body shape.

Yet the flip side is that people complain when looking around a yard and its mostly the colors they are most likely to buy

Seconded - that "hot house" metallic green that VZ commodores were sold in was a GREAT colour.

BA Falcons came in a pastel green about the same time that was also cool, but a bit more out there than the holden green and I only ever saw a couple that colour around.

Light grey, medium grey, dark grey and gunmetal, that's what the market wants, apparently. ?

Have to agree with Bowla3 green coloured cars are deemed to be more likely involved in an accident/near miss, as the peripheral eye sight of most people tend to miss that colour. I agree with the findings of the past having owned green cars and also nearly having an accident with cars in green suits. Silver. is seen as a lucky colour in Japan and is borne out by the number of cars in that colour.

^^^ Probably true, I borrowed a friend's dark green Peugeot 306 once to run an errand for them, and I have never had so many people pull out in front of me.
I assumed it must be that driving a small dull-coloured car with very little bright shiny stuff on the front, makes people subconsciously acknowledge it less, like you're not REALLY there. So for the rest of the day I drove it with the headlights on, and there was no more problem.

A walk through town has just reminded me of a few more popular NZ-new cars that came in green:

VZ Holdens also came in a metallic olive green, for a more grown-up option to the hot house green, mostly on Calais as well as lower spec models e.g. Acclaim & Executive.

The last generation of the old 3-box shaped Nissan Maximas came in a metallic olive green that was a little bit brighter than the VZ Holden olive green.

Nissan Micras were available in a green colour that looked like the inside of a kiwifruit.
