I bought this made-in-Japan, make unknown, home workshop jack from my local PSIS shop about 35 years ago. Around 2000 it failed to lift and I bought a smaller Motorcraft one to use until I "got around" to getting it fixed. While rearranging the junk in the workshop today I found it again and decided to check it out. It still won't work, lifts about 5 -10mm when I operate the lever, then falls back. Plenty of oil in it. I removed the piston, which is reasonably tight in its cylinder and the seal on the end appears undamaged. Also removed and cleaned the release valve (I understand you are supposed to store the jack with this valve open; I had been in the habit of leaving closed.) A plug on top of the body of the hydraulic unit and the spring below it were removed, cleaned and replaced. The instructions transfer on the jack says it should be opened 180 degrees for use. Still no go, can anyone please tell me what to do next? I hate throwing out anything which may be fixable!

there will be a ball and a spring , the ball and seat the ball sits on must be round not eggshaped or fluid will bypass instead of seal the fluids from traveling thru the gap like it should to hold the oil in the piston. http://www.antonine-education.co.uk/Image_library/GCSE/Hydraulic_4.JPG

Pull jack completely apart. Replace all seals. Rebuild it. Give it a birthday. It deserves one.

generally they have an overload release valve under the cap that says do not adjust.
if you wind this in and out your jack wont have a cut off which makes it dangerous.
Just go out and buy a new jack, they arent expensive and it could save a life

Thank you, gentlemen, I will see if I can dismantle it enough to check the balls and seats. I haven't seen a "do not adjust" label anywhere but will be mighty careful in view of what Jason-247 has written.

dont forget to bleed it! most of the issues with hydraulic jacks are simply air in the system. "usually" you just tip the jack up vertical, open the release valve and pump away for a bit to bleed the air out. just because there is fluid in the reservoir, doesnt mean its in the piston.
