I have a Honda odyssey and today when it was in park it was like it was trying to find the revs a going up and down, but as soon as in Reverse drive etc to was ok. Its the 1st time this has happened. Any ideas what could cause this

It shouldn't be doing it at all. Have you checked the coolant level lately OP?

Often the throttle body(part of the air intake system)get dirty with age and mileage and cause revs to hunt, get the throttle body cleaned and should run better.

Which year, late 90's four cylinder model? It might be the idle air control valve, those can get clogged with age. if you have the engine I'm thinking of it's on the front of the intake plenum with a wire plugged into it and coolant lines running in and out.

Air conditioning/heater turning on and off will often make the revs go up and down while parked. Turn the fan off and see if it still does it.
