I've been out on three separate car dealer web sites, chosen a vehicle on their list, clicked on the option to have my vehicle appraised as a trade on these vehicles, filled in all the boxes - name, address, ph numbers, vehicle details & photos etc. None have bothered to reply. I feel that if they offer that option the least they could do is respond to it even a phone call, text, or email to say 'bring your vehicle in for us to view'. It's only an appraisal and I know that all figures are subject to viewing (on both sides). Why put this option up if they don't intend to use it. A good salesperson would have made contact. One site I did it twice. Has anyone else used this option?

Nope but I wouldn't deal with them if they don't reply. Lazy and unattentive now, only be worse in after sales. Personally I'd email them with interest and trade in details.

If you wanted to buy the car you would of fronted up, checked the car to buy and they would inspect your dunger . deal done no tyre kicker from the Internet

I'm not seeing the issue? Entirely normal behaviour from NZ businesses. They probably are not interested in your trade in.

Then why offer the option if they don't want, as you put it. 'internet tyre kickers'. Every enquiry is a prospective buyer. A lot of tyre kickers front up as well.

i recommend you forget this option. because they will just give you scrap metal price for your car. if they sell you a car for 25 grand whom in reality is worth 10 grand then they will offer you 8 grand for your car. so they have 7 grand profit and yours cost them 0$ , then they try and sell yours for 10 grand and if no one is stupid enough to buy it you will see it at turners end of life car auction So the consumer guarantee act dont apply .
Now to why no one contacted you , i dont know how long you lived here but i find every trade is doing this if they where trading in germany for example they be out of busyness in 2 months time . But here it is normal if they tell me we call you back i say dont bother i call you again. because they dont call you back anyhow . 8 out of 10 people in this country whom tell you they call you back do not. So i dont know why this seems new to you?

No, not new to me. I've been a tradie for 50yrs +, the last 20yrs self employed. Going by what you are saying I must be in that 2 out of 10 that does follow up on my promises.

Surely you have a decent idea of what your car is worth? In the end it doesn't matter much what your trade is worth anyway, if the dealer gives you a higher trade in then there will be less negotiation on the price of his car, total change over price is all that matters and it should be the same whether they give you a high or low trade in price.

Pretty much all NZ businesses. Unless you're talking to someone on the phone or in person you can safely assume a 50/50 chance that any action will be taken. I prefer email as then there is a record and allows you to measure your response, think it over, but I have been let down time and again using email/contact forms. Find the car you want, preferably at a couple of yards, decide how much you want to part with to change, go and see them.

Usual NZ business practice. They will be crying to the media about how tough it is out there next year though.

kam--I'd like to STRONGLY suggest you check your spam box and your security levels o your e mails. |"a dealer I know" had almost this exact complaint from a potential customer.Luckilly it was a repeat customer who was going to give him a wind up for no reply. Turns out the reply was in his spam box. ALSO-If you are feeling nice just flick the dealers a "normal" e mail --ie direct to their e mail not via another site. Its entirely possible they are unaware of your enquiry for "mechanical" reasons. I can tell you a GOOD DP will be gratefull to you for pointing out an issue.

rubbish.
plenty of people shop for cars that are a significant distace away - too far to travel untill you are 80% sure you want to buy it, and just want to view to seal the deal.
No point doing a 6 hour round trip just to find out you are miles apart n terms of expectations.
previous vehicle I bought was in Tauranga. Im in dunedin.
Bit far to go just to talk. dd a deal on the phone, then flew up and collected, then drove home

Depends if you want to go through the pain of selling privately. I recently sought a trade-in offer for a nice car (2004 BMW Z4 low miles) on a new Fiat Panda. I was quoted $5,000, which is way below the very lowest price ($12,000) of a similar Z4 on TME. I don't mind; the dealer has to make a dollar, I will make my own decision.

You,ve got to realise what expenses the Franchised Dealers have,Wages for Managers, receptionists, company cars for main dealer/salesmen , rents etc plus gold chains and white shoes etc, golf club fees God the list goes on and on.What i find annoying is the arrogance of some of the Francise Dealers Thats why i will always deal with a smaller reputable, dealer. But then i,m just a grumpy old B. . d

KAZ -- because of the business I'm in, my inbox & spam box is checked frequently every day. My normal way of contacting dealers is by, as you call it, flicking them a "normal" email but because I have seen on a lot of dealers sites the option of getting an appraisal by the method that I used I thought I would give it a go, like, why put that option in place if the dealer has no intention of using it. After trying the first one (twice) and not getting any response, I thought I'd try a couple more in case it was a problem with the first, you know the rest from there. The enquiry wasn't via a different site as you have put it, it was their own site on all three occasions.

Thanks tam. That is the usual way I do it but thought I would give this other option a go to see how it works, which it didn't on all three occasions.
