How often do you check your water pump impellor and/or replace it. What condition is it in after x? number of hours.
Also asked in general.

I check mine annually. It can do 200 hours in a season. At 200 hours I can see no obvious signs of wear.

I check the tell tale every time I start it from cold. And it gets checked at every service. My boat has only done 493 hours in 20 years. I dont think it has been through many impellors at all. I have been told that those salt away products can cause havic with them. The trailer still has its original bearings.

Skite!

I check mine when the boat starts having trouble getting on the plane.
Ooops - totally wrong boat.

survivalkiwi, Feb 1, 7:39am
Yes but it just goes to show that if you buy quality and look after it all you still can have a good boat 20 years later.

Interesting. I am considering a 91 7m Haines with a 98 225 Yammy, hours not known but supposed to be regularly serviced.

So we have our since new with no problems. But we were aproached by a guy when it was about a year old telling us to hit up the local supplier to get the fuel tank lifted. Apparantly his one was less than a year old and the tank was hard on the fibreglass floor and developed holes in the tank and she drained out on him. Ours was put on small fillets of timber and are sill ok.
Another problem a mate had when he bought a brand new 535 from the same dealer was when he put it in the water for the first time he found that the steering was hooked up the wrong way. I know this is not a haines problem but it was bloody funny when he told me.

I've had outboards for over 40 years, and replaced a few impellers, worst I've done was a 3 year old Chrysler 55. The gear-case was stuck, the long stud at the front was totally corroded/welded to the leg.

I have found impellers last well, and would expect a life of at least 7 or 8 years or 500 hours, provided of course, you are running in clean water, not shallow water with a lot of suspended sand.

Probably an inspection every 3 or 4 years would be advisable, as it does not take long, and will make future dismantling easier before the inevitable corrosion takes hold.

I had my dingy outboard in for its one year service (only about 30 hours) and the technician wanted to replace the impeller. I wonder if the service shops push frequent impeller checking/replacement as another revenue stream?

I take it we are talking outboards here. Check your tell tale to make sure of water flow, works for me. Main reason for impellor failure is running the engine with no water flow, doesn't take long to burn out the rubber with no water

I have owned x3 brand new outboards and with every one, had the impellor and fuel pump diaphragm replaced at each yearly service. No worries for the sake of approx. $100.00 in parts.

That's a good handy tip. Fantastic boats in rough water.
Wouldn't be the first or last time a steering has been hooked up back't'front.

Had a 75 johnson 40 Hp that had been unused for 10 years . We pulled the leg off , stripped the g box cleaned & new seals ,bushes then new impellor .Wouldnt pump swapped direction of vanes still no go , so bought who;le new pump still no go ,took exhaust manifold & head off checked all waterways , could get water through with hose & flush muffs . had us & OB mech scratching our heads . In the end sold it as is where is as never found the problem .

Did you check the hole where the water comes out the engine?
I had one where a small piece of shell had blocked the hole the water squirts out of.
Confused the mechanics for ages until someone thought to stick a paper clip up it.

All were clear , it would overheat within 5 minutes runuing no water out of tell tale jet , took manifold off again -dry as a bone , yet would run ok on flushmuffs very strange .
