Had a guy come in yesterday with a 2003 Hilux 4wd ute, said it had a noise in the right front, the lower ball joint has rusted the top out and popped up ,to try and mill its way through the cv joint.Vehicle stiil had 6 months of a 12 month wof left.I will try and post a pic .
Can you tell if the part is genuine Toyota, or aftermarket?

Crikey. I believe that part has reached it's mechanical limit.

Is that the bolt at the top to unscrew and put a grease nipple in? Guess no one has ever thought of that if it is. I remember crawling under my cars twice a year to grease uni and ball joints.

Sorry matey Im missing the connection between a part failing and the WOF being 6 months from being needed. I could be wrong-(have been many times before according to mrs kaz) But it looks to me that the part could have failed one day after a WOF even minutes after a wof. --or am I seeing the break wrong? The fact it was milling its way into a CV comes down to idiot owner surely .
I was probably only trying to point out to people who have a current wof, that a piece of paper doesn't make a safe vehicle. It shows what corrosion can do as well as wear.

I had a hilux surf and can tell you those ball joints do not last long, i forgot how many we replaced it seemed like every wof was a different joint

LOL; in the "old days", (que the violin music in the background) we would unscrew the grease nipple, pop a small ball bearing down the hole, fit the nipple and tighten and then drive very slowly to the local testing station. !

If the ball joint is that rusty what does the rest of the underside of the vehicle look like?

just proves to me that the country needs a WOF system. maybe it should be shortened each time the vehicle fails untill the owner gets the message maitainence is not a dirty word but does replace she'll be right

Had that been parked in the sea(salt water) or a salt works like Lake Grassmere by chance, that's diabolical corrosion in there? I'd be looking at all the joints and even going through the rest of the vehicle with a fine tooth come if I were you?
