Those ones are less reliable than the turbo only ones, the maintainence must be perfect or it is a risk.
Also they must only ever be run on 98 petrol.
Pity another poster doesn't seem to be around at the moment or he could tell you all about it.
Also get an inspection from a VW dealership or specialist, as there are some things to look out for that are unique to VW vehicles.

Assume your looking at the golf GT. That's the 1400 two turbo job.
Yep, jazz discussed this recently here, you might search the forums and find it. Basically it's ok but the larger engine with just one turbo is better bet, less to go wrong, more robust.
Or the single turbo 1400 Tfsi which gets along pretty well too.
As said, if it's really well looked after and serviced, and you like the deal, it's ok.

There is a reason they dropped the twincharged engine.

I *think* that this model also had the problematic 7 Spd DSG gearbox too?

I don't believe there is a 1400 Tfsi. All the 1400cc cars are only TSI's (chain driven motors), some of which have a supercharger and turbo, and some only turbo (I speak under correction). The GTI's (and some wagons) are a TFSI (T denoting Turbo) or you have a standard FSI motor which is 2.0l. These all have a cambelt. The wagons are simply called 2.0 TSI, which has dealers confused all the time!. The 7 speed DSG is not problematic but is a dry clutch derivative whereas the 6 speed is a wet clutch. For whatever reason, the wet clutch is the preferred gearbox. Happy to be corrected.

The world of VAG is complicated! The F is for feul stratified hence FSI. The GT uses the FSI system and adds Turbos so you'd have thought it's TFSI but think your right and it's called TSI. Anyway we all know what we mean!
They did do a 1.4 non turbo too.
