'96Toyota Hilux 3lt diesel. How long would it take to remove starter motor, test it ,discard it because it needs too much work, then fit new starter. I have my own theory on how long it should take, it would be interesting what the professionals think. Also to remove and fit new barrel into ignition. ? cheers .

An hour to remove, test and fit a new one. No idea about the ignition barrel, never done one on a Hilux.

That's somewhere in the ball park . I didn't think it was such a dificult job for a professional. Was i being generous in allowing them two hours. ?

6 hours + for both of them would be over the top i thought.

Needs too much work? The only things that usually need doing on the starters are the brushes and solenoid contacts/plunger which are renewable without buying a whole new solenoid. Amateurs often mistake the latter as ignition switch faults.

I accepted their word as being not worth fixing,eg :bearings etc.

Way over the top.

3 max.

Starter may have needed the front clutch part as well. But not often full replacement.

Google the barrell replacement. Looks like twenty minutes max.

probably less than 30 min to pull the ignition out and put it back in. you can fix the contacts in those.
starter motors are very rarely replaced. most can be repaired. solenoid contacts are the common fault, then brushes and bearings.
some of the hiluxs run starter relays and sometimes they go faulty.

6 hours is ridiculous.
