Hyundai servicing is on the dear side, and didn't they have head gasket problems?

Yes. These are relatively old tech motors and the 2 litre feels fine only. I think I'm right that at this age of car ford only sold 2 litre ones here, we tend to want better power than Europe for instance. 1.6 would be adequate only. But do drive it and see if it is enough for you.

Focus auto depends on age. They were nice simple conventional auto but lately went to DCT. Hadn't heard of troubles with either.

To be fair. You should say Golf AND Corolla are industry standard in that segment.
Both good quality, basic, no nonsense vehicles. Built to last and not to thrill.
