a cheap and reliable car for Mr nearly 19. After someone drove into the side of his old car and took off last week its clearly not worth fixing his old one considering DH had not followed my advice and changed 3rd party to full! . Had nothing but disappointing results trying to source something that would hold his drums in and around the 3-4k mark. Had an appt to see one yesterday 45 minutes away. half way there he texts to say he sold it. so not on! Again because Mr 19 chose to sleep in we missed out on another 2 today. He starts work at 4am, so its poor DH is getting up to take him out to work. I'm over the mission of it all, at 19 their choices are limited and un realistic. and those dungers go like hot cakes! He's out now looking at something that's done like a million kilometres. i swear if it breaks down he can walk to work!

What sort of vehicles are being considered here? 3-4k is plenty of budget to get something reasonable, go see some dealers and see what's about in terms of trade ins.

Agreed. $3-$4k is loads for a reliable cheapy. You should have no shortage of choice for that money.
The only problem I see is the poor choices made leading up to needing another car.

Sorry molly I genuinely don't know where you guys are looking or what cars you are looking at. Theres a lot of cars available for around 4k molly--1) I would STRONGLY suggest your son looks at a Toyota Funcargo. You can definitely buy one for under 4k and they are perfect for lugging stuff like drum kits etc around. Don't worry about high milage in thiose --they do a million miles. 2) Good on you guys for helping out -Im sorry but Mr 19 needs to organise HIMSELF to get to and from work. --It isn't DH's responsibility. Sorry if that seems cruel--Im dad to 4 teenagers so I know how easy it is to step in and help

Appreciate your advice. We have also been parents to 3 teenagers, which as you are aware are not all the same. Some however need a little more support and are less pro active than their siblings. sigh! And he is ours! we have found dealers to be very shonky, and have nothing but over priced rubbish. We find a goodie, and its out of town, or someones looking at it, or its sold or or or. A fun cargo whilst i think they are gorgeous, Mr Image conscious wouldnt consider driving a sponge bob square pants car. lol

Kaz, 19 yr old male drum player in a funcargo? No way. Image way to important at that age surely.
op ! Old Volvo V70 estate. He'll get his drums and mates gear in, sleep in it, and be well protected. Can get 2000 plus for that money. Groote be cooler surely!
molly37,

Great, he could move out and live in it. yah!
franc123,

Well if Mr Image Conscious isn't prepared to consider sensible practical options given to him given his sensible practical needs and would rather be a full time pedestrian or be ferried about the place by parental slaves at 4am than drive a Funcargo or similar then there isn't much hope is there. I know who's doing the sponging and it ain't Bob.

Crikey, give him a break. Guessing you were the only perfect non image conscious 19 year old then.
tamarillo,
Nov 24, 5:09am
Yep just about. Out to party, has drink or two. Easy, sleeps in back with doors locked. Tint the windows and the imagination runs riot.

The last things I ever expected my parents to do was in any way sort out my transport, occupations, finances or my image! Ellerslie car fair at least gives you the opportunity to see what is around, even though there may be pitfalls.
My brother was a drummer and later as a freelance when playing in a band got in the way of studies. He ran a Morris Minor Traveller! Mind you, that was a fair few years ago. He wasn't in to sleeping in the car though.
Bedford CF van (with V8 power) was both my stepson's choice, but I doubt that mother would be too impressed at some of the details of their lifestyles at the time.

said 19 year old NEEDS to get to work. NEEDS something that will move his drums. NEEDS reliable.--Funcargo will do all that. THEN mr 19 can find his own car and sell the funcargo or other car he thinks are uncool.

Sorry molly (I sound like a grouchy old barsteward) First off -My advice. Dealers aren't as a rule shonky/dodgy etc. Unfortunately though your price is bang on where the dodgy types seem top congregate. Rule of thumb for you. If a dealers stock is mostly priced around 4k likely you are right. if 4k seems to be the very bottom end of their price range then you are likely to be safer.

you are correct mr kasbanz good advice

Some years ago I used my '36 Morris 8 to transport my drums around the gigs. Still image wasnt so all-important in those days

1990s Mazda Familia wagon?
Looks like a 'proper' car, plenty of young folks use these for lugging around mountain bikes etc etc.

i recon its you whom needs to sop spoon feeding your child . from what i read here. if a funcargo is not to his lords taste , my kid would get the steel boot up his ass as next option. just saying.
grangies,
Nov 25, 2:48pm
If you do find one, get a panel beater or spray painter to check it for rust, or hidden rust. They are getting old now, and many are off the road due to rust.

Problems with big Volvo's like that is insurance is very expensive for a 19 year old. Even though they are big slow tanks, the stupid insurers have alarm bells go off as soon as turbo is mentioned.

Diamante wagon? Cheap, reliable(no matter what people say), wagon so has room in the back for stuff.
