Buying sight unseen and delivery between Islands?

tamarillo, Jun 4, 7:21am
Jeffs transport is biggest around judging by number of trucks I see of theirs down south. Worth asking.
So what's this Land Rover you're getting?

bashfulbro, Jun 4, 7:28am
I bought a car, unseen, from Ch CH, the dealer recommended Toll, and said they always used them i use Toll, to transport it to Auckland, they did a great job, it cost me $550.

massive thread dredge--
BUT--remember as in all things in life you get what you pay for.
Theres been several threads about time taken to deliver cars and other issues.

Not too concerned about buying sight unseen so long as I get full vehicle reports done - will get the finance/accident one done, but AA for the mechanical check?

Also, looking at a car in Christchurch and we're in New Plymouth. Anyone know of a good transporter to get the vehicle delivered or best to just fly down to get it ourselves?

Any constructive advice welcome :) Thanks.

best to fly and drive, I bought in Christchurch, and drove it home

orca123, Jun 18, 8:47am
Was thinking about the same, but looking at over $1000 for flight, ferry and fuel. That's why I wondered if it might be best/cheaper to get it transported.

You would save a few hundred bucks by having it transported - but it's a mighty pleasant trip to do - so for the sake of a few hundred if you can spare the time you would have an enjoyable short break away anyway. A good excuse to get away perhaps!

You could save a grand by getting one from Auckland. it's not far away.

Get it picked up and put on the Ferry for around $550 and pick it up in Wellington. If the car turns out to be a dud at least your a bit closer to home.

Try Boyd and Janice at New Plymouth towing

Sold a car to a guy in Chch, he used Kiwi Transport I think around $795 from Auck to Chch.
AA and VTNZ aren't known for doing thorough pre purchase inspections.

orca123, Jun 18, 11:16am
As much as I'd love a couple of days away to pop to ChCh to pick it up and take a lovely cruise home, with two yr old twin boys, it just ain't going to happen ;/

As for getting on from Auckland, if I had found what I wanted for the right $$s then I would have! Kind of goes without saying that the nearer to home would have been better.

If AA not to god at pre-purchase inspection - who should I use? Christchurch based?

kazbanz, Jun 18, 11:41am
My suggestion orca is to get it inspected at a franchise dealerships workshop. They will know exactly what to look for with that make/model.

Toll Auto Express, I have a great service from them as its railed rather than trucked

flashgordon_nz, Jun 18, 7:54pm
900 door to door from timaru to np for a rally car.
If you can afford the time off, fly down and drive it. Enjoy the trip

Captain Transporter will do it door to door with insurance for $859.19. I've used them for interisland jobs before without any problems at all.

Just out of interest its might unusual to find ChCh cars cheaper than Aucks. Just remember if is cheap its probably rubbish.

ratherbefishin, Jun 20, 4:54pm
Auto Movement is the best, used them for years and never damaged one car. Sorry AA are useless in my opinion for these inspections, try your NZTA pre car inspection instead. Cheaper and more reliable.

Thanks for all your help chaps - have settled on a price for the car, will contact the transport companies in the morning for quotes :) If only I could've got what i wanted locally! Bloody Landrovers ;)

tigra, Aug 2, 7:07pm
THIS! Unless its a really special deal there's always another somewhere else closer to home.
