on my Nissan has developed a fault. When you turn the key on the needle shoots up to 3, although I haven't started the engine, and if you just sit with key on but not starting the engine the needle flickers between 0 and 3. Does anyone know how to fix this obviously electrical problem?

what year? make model ? often cars initiate the rpm nedle to check its working on key on, So yes i think you probably have something whom failed on your cluster if it is a older vehicle

How did I know this was going to be about a Nissan? It's probably dry joint and they can be resoldered but it's not really worth worrying about.

When I first started driving in the mid 1950's Rev counters were unheard of, you just drove to the sound of the engine, that is why I'm not to worried if the rev counter works or not

then you'd probably be more conversant with the vacuum gauge, they were a lot more useful, thing of the past now, went out with the carb

And the windscreen wiper worked off the exhaust, And my first car had four on the floor, and we used the gears as brakes, as the brake cables used to stretch if used too much.

lol, no, the same vacuum pipe, and they died when you had to climb hills using a little more throttle
I still drive almost brake free, learnt to drive in those old cable brake vehicles, and drove trucks with 2 inch wide front brake shoes, ie no brakes at all when you needed them so you learned how to survive without them

My daughters 1995 Pulsar has been doing this for years, comes right after a few minutes.
What was the cost to repair?

$263.92, only got it done because I was told that it does interfere with the car computer by giving wrong readings And the company that did it have always done a good job.
