Hi just failed a wof on play in Rh tie rod.VR Commodore
went an got parts jacked up car and no sign of wear or play.
It does have very slight play in the end of steering rack with engine off didn't test with motor running. do i go back and make them show me the play or just replace tie rod end?

yea you can do that also grab the boot yo you hold the rod and have somone wriggle the steering or tyre side to side to see if the play is in the ball from the rack-end , dont get crushed under the car use propper props befor you crawl under there .
replacing these components require wheel alignment toe adjustment afterwards as you wont ever get it 100% right without a mesurment-adjustment .

That is probably what they were referring to, ask them to clarify it. It should have been stated on the sheet if it was the inner or outer joint that was the problem. Before replacing anything check that the locknut between them hasn't worked slightly loose. Also remember if either of them does need doing you will need a wheel alignment afterwards.

Thanks intrade. Yes axle stands under cross member and front jacking points.I could feel the slightest movement at the rack end of tie rod.
But shouldn't this be checked with the motor on to pressurise rack ?

Franc123 the sheet states R/h tie rod end worn, but not inner or outer

Get them to confirm it, it should have been stated exactly where the area of concern was.

well why dont you check it like you said , also have somone feel the other side of the rack to see if play is in the ball transmission of movement wont be able to picked up on the other side of the rack.

With the wheels off the ground it will probably hard to find the play. Wiggle the steering wheel when the wheels are on the ground and it should be more obvious.

40mins to do 2 tie rod ends 65 min for recheck now to book a wheel alignment

DIY - only needs toe adjusted.
