I keep seeing this in titles of boats, but I don't know what it means. Google tells me Grand Old Party but that is the name of a political party.

I have read mixed things about fibreglass over wood, some say it's good other say water can get in the middle and cause rot. Anything I should look for when looking at a GOP boat?

There are some nice GOP boats out there, but beware that the resale can be low. If the purchase price reflects that, you can get a lot of boat for the money.
Go over the whole thing by knocking on it inside and out, there should be a 'bright' sound to your knocking. Any dull sound will need further investigation as it could be hidden rot. The upside is that repairs arent extremely difficult.

Check that there is no rot inside the hull where the stringers are as fresh rain water can sit there and rot and weaken the hull unless it is sealed properly. Happened to a mates boat going over the Manukau bar a section of the hull opened up like a trap door not nice had to be resqued blah blah blah etc

Hang on, you bid (and won the auction) 3 days ago and now you are asking questions? Let's hope if you don't like it the current owner is a gentle soul. Hartley boats built properly are good seaworthy craft. Volvo Penta stern leg and a 2.6 Mitsubishi Magna, neither would spin my wheels.

Inspect the hull for delaminating . go over it all & tap on it , if find part sounds hollow then its delaminated . Check inside for any sign of rot in the ply or timbers . If it has any walk away . cost silly mate $10 g to get his 18 ft gin palace reglassed, after buying it unseen .

personally i wouldn't touch a GOP boat unless its under 5 years old.
