hey guys bought a 2012 KTM today but after 20min riding i came into some issues.
firstly the background off the bike. its done 30 hours since new and im the 2nd owner after the first parked it up for 18mnths due to injury. I bought this bike from a dealer which i trust and dealt with for a few years, after purchasing there was a few thing that needed doing to it which was fine ie the Fuel filter ,injector , sprocket and brakes.
so after 20 min riding today with no problems the bike starts to splutter and loose all power until eventually a stall , then taking several minutes via push start to get it going again , and to make matters worst after 3-4 times of this happening the battery then went flat.
any opinions on what i need to look at? obviously i will take into the mech next week but just so i can continue riding for the weekend? is the battery? injectors? Pump? Filter?

You say the fuel filter and injectors needed attention, What did you do to them ?

my apologies when i said they needed attention they were all done by the mechs before i picked up. injecters filter etc.

Start simple, I reckon you have fuel sarvation. Riding in very hot weather by chance?

Along with ensure the tank is venting. It will be simple.

yea it was pretty hot today i did read somewhere that if fuel gets to hot the fuel pumps switchs off until its cool enough again?. Venting ? sorry for my lack of mechanical knowledge.

Fuel tanks need a vent to work correctly, usually found in fuel cap area or a hose. I take it it ran just fine after a cool down and you got it running? then did the splutter splutter thing again. Could be a collapsing fuel line or maybe its been squashed when putting tank back on? If it was that serious a problem the likely hood of restarting and running would be slim, therefore think simple. IMO. Or you have a blockage somewhere.

yes its all vented properly has a hose which vents from the cap into the frame. yea it spluttered and died and couldnt get it started for 10-20 min then it fired up sweet , so i took it back to the truck (30sec ride) then spluttered and died again , tried starting but by this point the battery was dead.

Some KTM's have a microscopic fuel filter, which blocks easily,,there is a better filter available now.

It does. Be sure this hasn't got a bit of dirt in it. Sounds like it could be the over heating fuel pump trick though. Check for kinked hoses. Had that after putting a road bike back together once. It always go me far enough to be a long way to push back home!

Yeah Honda all the way ! Those orange Austrian's over-rated, ridden with guys that have had them and they seem to do strange shite at times - Electric start deciding to work when it wants to. King of Baja shows their equivalent who the boss is in reliability and performance.

so after charging battery lastnight i was able to find out whats going wrong with it. took it for another ride today got 2-3 hours intermittent riding. doesnt appear to be anything that been previously discussed but in fact it looks like an overheating issue. bike gets to hot and shutdown , leave if for 10-20 minutes and its fine. i can get around 30 minutes riding before it decides that enough.
the radiator once is hot is hot all over same temp where the bottom should atleast be cooler than the top. So my guess is water pump.

Or, just straight water in the radiator? Guessing it needs additive. Also, check the cap seal is not perished.

Yes or that , seal seems fine. its going back to the shop tonight to be fixed

Fair enough. give them a chance to put it right first.
