electronic in my rangie stopped working . How can i test it , should it have 12v on 1 side & a pulse on the other . manual doest show engine /intsrument wiring .

It be most likely pwm signal on off don't screw the instrument most like 5 to 7 volt on off like wheel speed sensor signals

What year? And is there anything else at all that is not normal?

yes his ecu is fried probably from a shorted injector . What exactly do you hope to do now convert it to not have a ecu?

^^^ Yeah right carb./manifolds fo the 3.5 rarer than rocking horse poo . Serious Off roaders snap them up Replaced ECU 89 RR engine fine just tach doesnt work ECU had a fried diode pack due alternator had rotor short . Can get tach from wrecker but rather test it first .

Rev counter in your car comes off the back of the alternator. How did you fix your alternator?
If the alternator does not have the "w" terminal then you are sol.

Did you connect the wire back up to the correct terminal on back of alternator?. as above should go to "w" if you are replacing tac make sure it's suitable for diesel driven by alt.

did he mean the rev counter ?as the tachometer is for speed might have mixed it up as its called the tacho in german haha. if its the rev counter i would wire in a boy racer aftermarket one . as cheaper option.

Brand new alternator OEM Lucas replacement , the pulse for the tach comes from the - side of the coil & also feeds the ECU , plenty of used ones around but just wanted to be sure its fried .

Are you sure? This should be your RR circuit, 9 is the Tacho, 11 is the alternator.
^^ ah yes white wire left off the alternator it was supplied & installed by mech at garage , methinks he has put in a non rev counter early type alternator , no connection for it . off to see him monday . Paid the C enough

I Worked it out that as its 3 phase ac rectified to dc then taking wire from 1 phase would give signal each revolution . did it & walla rev counter works again ,.

That was a good thread and outcome - plenty of genuine advise and I didn't understand a bloody thing.

Was going to suggest that, but was going to do some research first. Don't forget that the alternator stator will be quite happy to put out something over 40 Amps and your tacho wire won't be up to that if the tacho end shorts. I would try a 10K resistor close up to the stator winding.

Yep thats it just a stator tap. its exactly what the 'w' (winding) terminal is. Just easier. Pretty poor on sparkies part to leave it off.
