Pics are of wiring of current unit, is there a name for this sort of wiring so that I can get right adaptor for plugging in a new unit, probably Sony.
Thanks in advance.

Those appear to be ISO plugs. The smaller yellow/green/blue plugs may not be compatible with your new head unit.

Thanks, but that's helpful as I see adaptor sets for sale both here and auto store, but wanted to know name of what I've got!

You usually need to get head unit to iso and then iso to car. Two adapters. Easy. Plug and play. You may also need a euro aerial adapter and also to swap the red and yellow wires around at some point in the harness. Acc and constant feed. Otherwise you will lose your presets etc when turning off car.

Help! If I have head unit to ISO won't the cars wires plug in that?
Why swap red and yellow?
Would usually get this done but bit skint and have time on hands.

Yes, ISO to is all you will need in this instance.

Sometimes the "standard" for red and yellow isn't really standard at all and they are the wrong way round. This won't do any harm but as above your new stereo will keep losing it's memory when switched off. If this occurs, swap them.

What I do when I need the adapters is take the new plug that comes with the new headunit to the shop and ask for ISO to "this". Some manufacturers have more than one plug type. *cough Pioneer cough*

Thank you everyone, feeling confident and the edsauto link is great.

tamarillo--To clarify here.
You need TWO adaptors.
One for 98 audi to ISO then one for ISO to whatever brand of radio you want.
Depending on HOW the Bluetooth is wired you might need to then wire the Bluetooth into the 3 spare wires on the ISO-radio adaptor.
Im assuming your audi radio is standards single DIN
Pity you aren't here--it would take less time to do the job that to type this out

Thanks to those who helped re head unit wiring.
Bought a Sony with Bluetooth, USB etc on special at Super Cheap, rung edsauto and without needing pics of my wires he sorted out the two wiring adapters and an Arial plug adaptor, told me what to do with loose blue wire, and the right plastic surrounds. Audi slot is little wider than DIN so he sent two spacers that fitted right first time.
An audi forum pointed out that audi have the battery live and ign live wrong way round so swapped them and it fits and works perfectly first time.
Always had these things done professionally but am cash poor time rich right now.
Sony works brilliantly, even the Bluetooth phone is loud and clear even without optional external mic (rang friend to test) . And let's me dim it's lights and turn off stupid messages and noises they all make.

So big thanks, especially for edsauto lead.
