Slightly off topic not a car. Where do you stand if you buy something off a salesman and take his word for how something works, only to get home unpackage the dishwasher to find the two specific features you asked about do not operate as salesman stated. The two things that were important were auto off as well as saved settings. Now every time I turn it on i have to spend a minute or two scrolling through settings selecting certain items on screen then press power. I then have to turn the dishwasher off once it has finished otherwise lcd display stays illuminated on all night saying finished. Can i take it back?

I would take it back. It was not as described. Ask for a change to a model that does have those features.

Absolutely, there are three key things going on here which you can quote if you need.
1. Goods are not fit for the purpose (consumer guarantees act, you stated your purpose and specific requirements)
2. Goods don't match their description (consumer guarantees act, and includes verbal representation)
3. Goods have been miss represented (Fair trading act).
Have a quick look at this link, even better print it out and take it with you. I find many retailers conveniently "forget" their obligations under these acts and need to be reminded, sometimes even reminded in writing.
In practice it's pretty hard to argue with the government document in front of them, it's often the quickest easiest solution.

Thanks guys it was Harvey Norman. I'll flick them a Nicely worded email.I know it sounds pedantic. But it's $1700 and still the same as my old one

Good luck being polite to Harvey Norman. We had a run in with them over a dryer. Needless to say we won but it took a few interesting words.

That's why I have heard them referred to as Hardly Normal.

We had good dealings with Dustin at Nelson Mat. He was in the T.V. audio part when we did a return a month ago, not sure if white ware is the same dept.

As an aside, why turn it off? I assume to save power? I'd suggest the standby power consumption of a modern $1700 dishwasher is pretty good, probably only about 5W. At $0.25kw/h that's $10.95 a year if you left it on 24/7. Worth the hassle?

think they are separate I always get good service. I nderstand it must be hard trying to know every function of every make and model. The salesman was good I believe it was a unintentional mistake.

yes the display illumination with every other appliance in my house is a annoyance more than anything.

I suspect problem #1 is caused by action #2. Have you tried opening and closing the dishwasher door at the end of the wash instead of turning it off? That makes ours go dark. but if yours stays lit up all night I don't blame you for not liking it.

door opens by itself when finished if I close it still stays on. If I leave it on I still have to scroll through 3 menus to select tablet wash for next cycle

Bummer. Good luck with the retailer. We bought a new Simpson washing machine last year and when it finished washing it beeped and flashed lights constantly, and didn't stop beeping until someone went in there and opened the lid (at which point it beeped also). It drove me insane. it would beep all day while we were at work ,or all night if you put washing on and then went to bed. but it wasn't something I had imagined to ask the retailer about prior to piurchase. Luckily they were OK to exchange it for a more expensive option three days later. I'm so glad that they did. and so glad I kept the packaging too

Ours is just a basic F&P unit & it saves settings, turns it's screen off when done & doesn't keep beeping when finished. Auto stop/ restart if you open the door while washing All by it's self. Not to shabby for $800

When you say "every time I turn it on" . I presume you are using the machines power button & NOT turning it off at the wall.

Mat-It sould like there is an issue with that particular machine. My first thought is to go discuss the matter with the retailer in a calm reasonable manner.
