Trademe, Facebook and other sites promote cameras. Some expensive. Can someone recommend a comparatively inexpensive camera with a good mounting AND a good battery life. The cigarette socket in my car already powers a radar detector and a TomTom. And, because of Apple's bastardry, probably an iPhone 6. Battery life's is important.

The iphone 6 has double the frame rate, get an app and a windscreen mount for the phone. Plenty of good apps out there.

I've said before in these threads, that you won't be able to read a number plate of a vehicle coming towards you with a camera that only does 30 frames per second. You need 60 frames per second to have any chance of being able to read a number plate off a still frame. Even if you have to drop from 1080 to 720 resolution, to get the higher frame rate.

This app utilises the maximum iphone 6 frame rates, far superior video to many of the cheaper dashcams, on a piece of kit that you already have. http://www.hitcase.com/tag/iphone-dash-cam-app

Just bought the new Garmin NuviCam. GPS with a camera. Proof will be in the pudding.

catch22, you MIGHT miss the number plate due to low fps and cars high speed, but you WILL miss it if you use low res with typical wide angle lens most of these cameras use.

Repco were selling one with HD video for about $150. Has GPS and can record up to 32 memory card (about 5 hours).

Within 10 years, I think insurance companies will make them mandatory.

And just remember, while you are doing your thing filming all the idiots on the road. they too are filming you. More and more these days.

That I doubt. Most the cameras are as useless as the driving skills of the drivers that use them. They show a single view of whats happening like the blinkered view and unawareness of whats going on around them of many a driver on the road. We get many a laugh in the office of people who try to use them to prove what happened in an accident.

They will be a lot better in 2025.

I hope you are referring to the drivers skills

The responses have been interesting. Most interesting advice was the reference to 60 fps. I had not heard this before. It seems to me that, if the reg plate cannot be read, the cameras are of only minor use.
If one cannot read the plate, one cannot be Victor Meldrew.
