No I wouldn't. Genuine parts are not expensive. $200 would get you a cambelt, waterpump and tensioner from a dealer.

actually I might well do. The reason being the gates belts are more oil resistant than factory so with an older car might be worth while

I would buy the real mcoy from the dealer. timing belts a critical part . I might buy brake pads or wiper blades elsewhere.

The real Mcoy? Do you think Toyota makes their own timing belts?
bwg11,
Apr 29, 6:55pm
No. But from experience, if it failed prematurely, there would be much more chance of Toyota covering the damage than Repco covering an aftermarket part.

LOL. Toyota aint gonna cover nothing for a 1992 vehicle.

That is the exact opposite of the truth. OE warranty is 12 months in most cases. Gates warranty is service interval replacement ( recommended replacement interval) and covers parts, labour and damaged caused by part failure.

The question really is buy Gates- or buy O E M-Which very often IS Gates.
elect70,

^^ exactly OEM could be Chinese knock offs , at least Gates is a well known & trusted brand .

I have been using $20 Gates belts on my Lotus Esprit for years without a problem. The current specs for these belts is above that of the OEM belts when the car was new.

STA parts. Has anyone ever had issues?. that is where im buying it from.

I too am happy with Gates belts, if they are good enough for our Alfa 156's and the like (which are very hard on timing belts) then they are good enough for your Toyota. I would personally be more worried about what waterpump and tensioners you get. Those are both items that I have had trouble with, with aftermarket brands. So make sure you are getting a complete Gates kit or at least a known good quality brand pump and tensioners, as sellers will often supply tensioners and waterpumps seperately. Best of luck with it.

I know this much, some cars dont run that well with a clone timing belt . Some hondas and mitzis in my experience. also came across a Vitz that was running a clone accessory belt and it was vibrating the alternator very slightly made the engine sound as if it was knocking. changed the belt to factory and it fixed it. personal choice
Damn good-after all most decent engine reconditions use em

Toyota genuine parts are Chinese knock offs - are you serious?
